Does any one know, or does anyone use there Jeep as a tow vehicle? Say to pull a boat or something. How much can one tow safely with a jeep?

Not much, and depends on your engine, and gearing, as well. I don't think you can tow over 2-3,000 lbs. Not a good idea to tow much with such a short wheelbase......not very safe.

My dad pulled a pop up camper with his 83 for probably 8 years with no problems. He was careful never got over 60 and left plenty of distance. That being said Jeeps are such small wheelbase that towing much over 1500 pounds (which I believe is what the TJ is rated at) isn't a very good idea.

My first CJ-7 had the 304 and could pull an 18 foot boat (with its own V8) from Las Vegas to San Diego and back (up and down Cajon pass for those who really know Southern Cal) every year. It was a work horse and never gave me any problems.

i have a 83 cj-7 and before we put the v8 in it, it had the standard 258, I pulled my sisters Ford Tempo up and down hills behind me one day when it broke down, never even hestitated, pulled the car like there was nothing even behind it.

Just wouldnt get up to high speeds.

It's not always the pulling... it's stopping. The weight of your jeep is not enough to stop as soon as you should be able to safely dragging a car that size behind it. Either you were lucky, or there was someone in the Tempon working the brakes.

I guess ignorance was bliss all those years ago. Just never really thought about it. The dang thing would just pull anything we put behind it and never seemed to have any braking problems. Would probably still be driving the stupid thing if I hadn't been t-boned by a kid blowing through a stop sign. Witness said I rolled 5 times before landing back on the wheels. This was a 79 CJ-7 so it did not have the full roll cage or shoulder belts if you can believe it. the other thing most folks can't believe was that I got away with a concussion and a broken pinky finger...

Being able to pull something with a jeep is the easy part. Stopping or manuevering in an emergency situation is most likely where you will have problems.

Depending on your terrain also..where i am at in the Black Hills..you would't be able to tow anything up these Hills.....

I tow a boat that weights more than my jeep without a problem, but I don't stop for yellow lights and I leave a lot room between me and the car in front of me. The problem isn't the towing, it is the stopping.
