welcome to the forum. the title says older cj, but you saw a wrangler? $1000 for a running jeep is great. check for rust, a lot of them are rotted out. let us know what year you are looking at, and we'll help ya with what to look for.

k so i got a phone call today from the guy and it has a 283 chevy small block and the transmission case is cracked and he will take 750 for it. It is rusted out but i'm not to worried about it because i went to school for autobody and have the tools and know how to replace the pretty much flat sheet metal it already has 31 inch tries and we just got about 8 inches of rain up here and he left it sitting outside and i went and checked it out the day after and the soft top did not leak at all

check the frame, they tend to rot out towards the back and at the body mounts.

just make sure the thing is worth the work, if the frame is rotted it usually isn't. check the body out real well, floor boards, rockers, windshield frame. beware of diamond plate covering, usually hiding something.

CJ's are freakin great. i love mine it takes a lot of abuse on the trail. FYI CJ's are notorious for the guages not working, especially the fuel guage. just keep that in mind when you are looking at it cause you'll probably have to fix 'em.
