There are plenty of trails, you just need to know where to look. Most trails are for ATV/UTV access. Pm me and I'll give sou some ideas.

We used to climb the giant dirt piles that were randomly located around town. LOL
Sometimes it was down off of Northern Lights Blvd... Sometimes it was next to Fred Meyers.
I never knew why they were there... Sand truck supply or something?

We also used to take day trips on the dirt roads on the backside of Elmendorf, AFB (I was stationed there).
We were always turning down strange roads and driving all day, exploring and discovering some of the most beautiful scenery we'd ever seen.
One time we found a lake, one time we found a trail overgrown with trees that followed a stream.
But that was all back in the mid 90s, before GPS was available, so we never found that stuff again.
Unfortunately, I have no idea where we were at those times.

The good trails seem to be north and North East of Anchorage. We have found a few mainly towards Sutton. On past Wasilla to the east we found some more. Hatchers Pass is a beautiful area but mostly trail riding.

The base (JBER) actually has some decent trails. Some that are pretty dang long too. You could definitely spend the whole day back there and not run over the same puddle twice.

JBER does have good trails. The last couple of years they have implemented the ISportsman online registration to get back there. So now you need to make an ISportsman account and sign in and out along with designating which area you will be in. Not all areas are open, and the open areas seem to change due to military training. It is not that bad. I have been riding my bike back there and can sign in and out with my Smartphone. You can also sign in and out on a computer in the guard shack. Let's of places to explore back there. I found the frame of an F15 just sitting in the side of the road (used for training).

I think it has been about three years now. They combined Elmendorf and Ft. Rich. It was in the planning for about ten years prior.

Oh ok. Thanks.

I was there from '93 to '96.
It's a wonder that they didn't merge earlier.
It's not like they were manning the gates between the bases anyway.
