Silver Lake Michigan Trip over Columbus Day Weekend

Hi folks,

I'm new to the forum and new to Jeeps (sort of). Took my family to Silver Lake Michigan earlier this summer and loved it so much I want to go back before the dunes close for the season in November. My kids are off school on Columbus day making October 12-14 my last good chance to make this trip. I was looking to explore some easy trails along the way in the Manistee National Forest area north east of Whitehall.

Will most likely be staying here... Silver Lake and Mears Michigan Resort Hotel - Dunes Waterfront Resort. Yeah, it's kind of expensive but it is the nicest place in town and the only one with an indoor pool for my kids to swim, especially if the weather is a bust. It would be great to find some new family oriented friends, couples, etc. interested in making the trip. It's those national forest trails I'm mostly worried about going at alone, and will probably skip them if I can't find some company. Posted about making this trip in another Jeep forum several days ago and no replies yet. Hoping for some better luck here.

Little about me... I traded off motorcycling this year after a 26+ year run for a vehicle that is more family friendly. Bought a 1997 Wrangler and started doing a little preservation work on it. Not a hobby yet, but I may get there someday. Not into 8" lifts, 40" tires, extreme or insane terrain or any of that stuff. I've done my share of rough off-roading on the military reservations of Ft. Carson and Ft. Irwin as well as the East/West German border in the 80s on various trucks including the M151A2, M34A2, M520, M559 GOERS and many others while hauling food, fuel or ammo during my Army years. Also owned a Chevy Scottsdale 4x4 pickup back then for some serious Colorado mud hole adventures with my Army buddies.

Now I'm just looking to share a little conservative off-road fun with my kids in a way that presents little risk to the vehicle or it's occupants. Really hoping to find some like-minded folks with a similar off-road interest. I'm looking at what local clubs are around the St. Charles / Geneva / Batavia area as well. Any folks in the Fox River Jeep Club fit this profile? Interested in making the Silver Lake trip?

Sounds like this might be fun. We have an unofficial club with 8 jeeps from my church I'll let them know.

Thanks for the reply. I'd love to meet new Jeep fans close by. Let me know next time your "club" gets together and maybe I can come meet you guys.

Sounds like fun! After almost 20 years of MCY I traded it in for an 02 TJ!

Which days are you gonna be there? I wanted to check that place out.

So doesn't look like we will make this trip. We are planning on going to the Badlands the weekend of the 19th as they are having a 4wd customer appreciation day. It's only 3hrs from Bartlett area. We are going to caravan down on Saturday morning.
