Soft top thru winter ?

Since we have been having a great winter in the Chicago area I thought I would ask all those that run a soft top through winter how it has been. I am trying to figure out if I should pay $2k for the dual top group. I would like to just go with a soft top all year round but don't know if it is feasible. I'd rather save the money for a set of half doors for the summer...

I only drive from Wheaton to Downers Grove for work so I don't do a ton of highway commuting if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Brad

Granted I have only had my JK for about 5 months now but its a soft top and I have survived this wonderful Chicago winter so far (I did have to replace the battery though and my heater/fan is starting to make some noise). I typically only drive it about 4 miles to the train station and it usually warms up about half way there just in time to thaw me out before I freeze again outside. Heck my Honda that I had before this was just as cold on these mornings and probably took longer to warm up. The key thing is the softop at least blocks the wind and I think that can be more brutal then just a cold day. I also dress warm on the cold days so I would rather slowly warm up rather then get to a hot/sweat just to get out again and freeze. However I have not yet tried a hard top so I can't say if its worth it or not.

I'm here Indiana we have had a pretty bad winter as well but I run soft top on my 88 and I've not had any issues with keeping nice and warm even when its -10 with a wind chill of -35

They're pretty tough. Don't let wet heavy snow to sit on the soft top for a long time.
We have more light fluffy snow here in Utah, but we've had a bit of a warm winter with a few days of wet snow. If it snows overnight, brush it off first thing in the morning.

I have the dual top group and run the hard top in the winter and soft top in the summer. The only thing I would do different is get a non painted hard top due to tree branches...

This was my first winter in my TJ that I didn't put the hardtop on. I was very surprised at how well the soft top has done so far. Left for work numerous times when it was well below zero out and I am nice and toasty the whole way to work. Pretty sure I'm going to sell my hardtop now that I know the soft top does just fine on those really cold days. Save your money for those half doors!

This TJ is my first jeep. PO ripped out the carpet so I'm bare floors with floor mats, soft top, and no garage spot with little to complain about so far. The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of security.
