I am wanting to change my rear diff on my 2001 TJ Jeep Wrangler. I was wondering if anyone can help? I have some friends who are happy to help but I am a girl (no a big deal but I did have to say it) and I need a little bit of background on what I need to do. I have just paid $10.00 for the 2001 Jeep Wrangler service manual and that has no help at all. I have Googled as well but no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Unless your flying me out there lol. Always wanted to see Australia . If your changing the entire axle, that would be something you could easily do with a friend and simple tools but if your talking about changing the the differential to something like a locker or limited slip, I'd highly recommend leaving that up to a professional at a well known shop
Haha money would be the factor but thank you so much for your advice. I will just be doing a straight swap as my old diff broke and it needs replacing. The friends who are "helping" are guys so they will be able to point me in the right direction I should think I just wanted to not look as stupid as I think I might due to the fact of having no idea what I am doing )
It should be fairly easy to show them you can hold your own in the garage haha. There will be 4 control arms to unbolt that are usually a pain to break loose. B sure to soak everything in a good penetrating oil like pb plaster for a few days by the way.. Then you'll have to do the track bar bolt which is a very large torx bit, T-55 I think? Don't hold me to it... The sway bar is mounted at 2 locations with 4 bolts all together, good idea to do it's bushings now. Then you will have to remove the brake line t. You remove the vent tube from the top and put a deep well socket over it and loosen it to remove the T. To get the e brake cables out you have to remove the brake drums, pull the cable in towards you, push all 3 of the little "clips" in and it will slide right out. That can b a pain. Read that a few times and show up the guys
I visited a site called 4x4xplor,they had a photo by photo series on how to remove/replace them.I regeared mine with some help from a friend, dead set easy....
