Favorite Photo (For a Photo Contest I'm Entering)?

Can you folks do me a favor? On my reptile website, we're going to be hosting a photo contest...no, I'm not going to ask you all to register and vote for me. It's MUCH easier than that.

Of the 7 phots, I have posted in this thread...can you vote for which one you feel is the best. By BEST, I mean the best quality...lighting, angles, creative, etc and not just your favorite on a "cuteness" scale...or for those who hate reptiles "least ugly" scale. lol

I'm trying to determine which one I should enter...feel free to post comments on why you like/don't like certain pictures as well. I'm always interested in constructive criticism.

great shots!
For me, it came down to #2 and #4. I love the brightness level on the eye on #2. If #4 was a little darker in color I would have voted for that one. Love them both though!

Haha! I voted for #4 because I liked how bright it was.

#3 has the most interesting composition and is less static than the other shots. I liked #5 also, but his eye is so striking I felt three captured it better. Plus, I loved the faint change (object) in background that hinted at his desire to breathe fire.

For me it was a toss between 1 and 3. I thought that #1 had a little more clarity then #2, the scales were better defined by the small difference in distance and the subject is centered a little better. #3 has great contrast with the varying dark backgound shades enhancing the geckos bright colors. They are all good though.

Thanks for the comments so far...he sure was breathing fire today. He's normally very calm (but HAAAATES cameras)...I haven't been bitten by him in a couple years and he bit me multiple times during this shoot. Very light nips (before he calmed down he used to leave my hands covered in blood!)...but enough to show his dissatisfaction with the camera.

I tried to get photos of some of my other stuff, but my snake wouldn't cooperate...didn't try with my other gecko since I know many of our entries will consist of that specific species...toads are too dull colored and there was no way in hell I was going to try photographing a lightning fast tarantula that's only as big as my thumbnail currently. LOL

They are all really good pictures. I like the color, contrast and composition in #3, and his foot looks almost... fluffy. But, the detail in the eye, in #2, is very cool. It looks almost fluid.

I ended up voting for #3 but it could have gone to #2 just as easily.

Same here, I went with 3 rather then 1.

It's easy to get shots of my beardie because he is very laid back, but I am curious as to how you got the gecko to stay put. Little Lizard tranquilizers perhaps? Everytime I get a camera anywhere near my crested he either jumps and attaches himself to the lens or my face, or he just runs and hides.

Fellow herper? Nice!

This particular tokay is very calm and doesn't bolt too much...he was nervous too so he mainly sat there watching every movement I made. Any time the camera would move closer, he would gape a little wider and raise up/lean away and occasionally if I got too close, he'd bark and lunge at the lens. The goal was pretty much to get him into a good position and then get just close enough to make him gape without causing him to lean away/raise up and spoil the pose.

I tried to get some shots of my red milksnake on the same setup and he wanted nothing to do with it (may have caught scent of the gecko and freaked out)...he was darting back and forth like a freaking firecracker.

My crested gecko would have been pretty crazy too...no way she would have sat still...she'd have kept trying to climb the props. lol

Btw...if you're looking for a good set of herp forums to join, check my site out... HerpFamily.com Welcome ...word on the street is it rawks

Edit: Btw...thanks for all the comments/votes everybody. I appreciate it...I went ahead and entered #3.

I liked #4 because of I could see the scales and detail the best. Also I could see his claws/hands. I would've liked #5 the most except he had a little spittle/mucus bubling up in the corners of his mouth.

It'll be a web vote among members sometime in December, but not sure if it'll be for active members only or what...my other admin is in charge of running the contest, especially since I'm involved. I'm just shelling out some money to help cover the cost of shipping the prize to the winner.

I prolly won't ask for any help though...just because I don't want anyone accusing me of cheating since I own the site. LOL

I like 2 and 4 the only thing I see wrong with the shot is you can see the flash. What you should try is getting a white sheet over the flash so it still emits light but not enough to cast a bright spot in the photo. If that bright spot on it's head is gone that photo (4) would be the best.

I'll make sure to post the tarantula when it's full grown... as the guy I got it from said, "Give it some time and you will have an 8" purple monster on your hands in no time!" ...I won't post my response to that here though

I voted for #4. Though I would have liked to seen the rest of his arm/leg area. in the bottom of the frame, see what he is holding on to.

Here are my thoughts on the others:
#1 and #2 too close for me, which is odd as usually in my photography closer is better.
#3 I find myself looking at the object to the right more than the subject.

#5 I like the 3/4 shoot, but for some reason the mouth open is not working for me, as well as both the front leg/arm and most of body out of focus.
#6 washed out
#7 I like the composition, however it looks more gray scale than black and white to me.
