GoPro or no?

So I have a ridiculous amount of money this year in REI dividend credit and I was contemplating getting a GoPro Hero 3 Black. With my dividend and the 20% member discount I could get the GoPro plus some extra add ons (batteries bacpac, mounts) and still have a little left over for some random stuff.

I know of some of the issues that some have been having with the H3 Black, in regards to the batterly life, lock ups and firmware issues.

However, the positive reviews appear to outweigh the negative ones and feature set seems to be pretty awesome.

Primary use would be mounted to the Jeep for trail runs and random video shooting, with some backpacking/outdoor type shooting.

Anyone have one that has some more direct experience with the Hero 3 Black (or other GoPros for that matter) that could offer a review?

I have an older Hero that I suction cup to the front of the hood. Works great. I added the larger battery pack with the 32 gig card I get about 4 hours of video at a 720 setting. It's been rock solid reliable and I'm happy with it.

If you've got a smart phone, skip the black edition and get the silver.

Why is that?

I have a Samsung S3 that films decent video, I just do not see myself strapping it to the bumper.

I have the Hero 3 silver edition. Got the GoPro app on my tablet and can see what the camera sees. I can change between modes and change all the settings straight from the app. I love it. I have had no problems with it and it takes great photos and video.

The black has a few features the silver and other don't have, like a remote. but as the top poster said, there are apps for tablets and smart phones that take care of that for you. The other small features the black has i very seriously doubt you'd need or use.

White Edition-amateurs who want to video some stuff and toy with editing
Silver Edition-amateurs/pro's who are doing some heavy editing
Black Edition-pro's who are making professional quality movies.

Just my .02

I have the black and my only complaint really is that, the battery life sucks when using wifi. A larger battery or a spare will cure this, but if the battery dies while recording you WILL LOSE the video that you were filming. I dont know why they cant program it to stop and save footage before powering off. But this has been a problem since the Hero2.

Gotcha. I was looking at the Black more for the expanded speed settings and the better overall image quality; I had already planned on using the app for the majority of the remote use. Otherwise If I was buying at full price, I would probably get the Silver.

Thanks for the info though

I have the Black>I find the remote that comes with the unit a little more handy than smartphone when you are on the go.Example I can mount the remote( 4 easy access) on my dash,on bike handlebar or in pocket if mounted on helmet>Wich i guess you could do with phone? remote is just a little smaller. I agree with the battery dilemma ,so I carry 4 batteries and a battery backpac with a charger to keep enough juice on hand to power the days activities. If you think you will use remote get the black .Remote 75 bucks ,black 100 bucks remote inc.
