Good luck and welcome. It'll all be worth it in 5 years.

The hard part is getting to the point where you don't think about it, where adjusting the camera is a reflex. I've been doing it long enough I can walk into a room and know what shutter speed, f-stop, and ISO setting I can get away with.

Once you've got the technical stuff down, it's just like hunting.

A bunch of my photos are posted on pages 4 and 5 in the thread below. Tried to keep it fairly clean...

Thanks. It's an awesome job...especially now that I'm freelance and can choose what I wanna cover. For the most part.

Expensive as hell owning all your own equipment though. I got far more tied up in cameras than in my Jeep, even fully modded.

I hear you on that. I had to go in to my Jeep fund to buy my camera. But I'm enjoying the class so far .

You have got some talent dude. I just looked at all of your pictures in the Random Photo Thread. Amazing. I got a little higher end point and shoot for christmas (Canon PowerShot s95) and have been having fun playing with the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc since this is one of the few point and shoots with this much control. Still learning though

Thanks man.

The PowerShots rock. Much better to have control over your settings than be at the mercy of the camera, which wants to render all scenes in the same tonal scale (mid gray, very much like wet concrete). Tricking the camera into giving you what you want is the challenge.

Once you get comfortable with the inverse proportionality of the settings, just play with it. Move the camera around with slow shutter speeds. Or find something in bright light, surrounded by shadow, and underexpose enough that only the object in the light shows up. It was a lot harder to do in the film days. Now you can just look on the back of the camera and know whether or not you nailed it.

I was giving my brother a quick lesson in using flash last year @ his house in VA, and took these two photos of my dog about 30 seconds apart in his den on a bright day. Two completely different ways of showing the same thing.

Excellent view!! While I did not work in Madigan, I did manage to sneak this photo in after my sleep study.
