A hi-end semi-auto shotgun is just as reliable as pump, and from a tactical perspective offers some advantages. You can still have a jam or short-stroke a pump gun in a high-stress situation. And what do you do if you get shot in the arm and can't cycle your pump?

I have an FN SLP tactical 12 guage and a Benelli Nova pump. The rate of fire and ease of follow-up accuracy makes using the SLP a no-brainer for home defense over the Nova.

Shotguns are great for barricaded room VS intruder but not always the best for navigating tight hallways or being able to hold an attacker off with one hand while firing with the other. Depends on whether you have family outside the main bedroom to worry about.

As for shotguns' use in densely populated housing, they can easily penetrate walls with slugs and 00 buck, so you need birdshot or similar load for apartment dwellings.
I still contend that if you are upstairs and the bad guy is downstairs that "rack" sound will keep them from coming up.... Or even down the hall. The idea of them blindly shooting toward a sound and using up rounds doesn't concern me. Its not like there are homing bullets. While racking one handed sounds difficult I do it all the time. Either way peppering a hallway or stairway will keep all but the dumbest thief at bay. We're talking home protection from burglers here not holding off a special forces team. Home defense slugs or 00 buck is a waste of money. I know people shot with bird shot in hunting accidents. Trust me they told me they didn't move afterwards. They just prayed the blinding pain would stop.

My comments about what load to use where to speak to the statement (not sure if it was you or someone else) that shotguns were good for apartment scenarios. I wanted to point out that that's true only with certain loads like birdshot. I wasn't discounting birdshot as a choice for home defense.

As to cat burglar VS special forces I think you may be exaggerating to obfuscate a valid concern I brought up. Sure, a daytime thief will probably wet their pants that they caught someone at home, much less that said person is armed. However, in a nighttime home invasion scenario you might be facing either crackheads or multiple bad guys (possible with ARs if they can find ammo (hah)), and if so you would find a semi-auto shotgun to have some advantages over a pump. Interior home doors are typically hollow and offer little protection when a bad guy realizes you have a shotgun, and he better start firing into the door so you don't shoot him first. In my scenario the first thing he will hear is the sound of Hell's bells.

But I will say, having a shotgun at all is a good thing. I'm sure we agree on that.

Not bad, I'm glad I'm in Texas where we don't have that kind of BS. Here my CHL can serve as the NICS check so I fill out the form, show licenses, pay and walk out with my new firearm.

So here's a quote for you: "A right delayed is a right denied" - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here's a pic of my latest acquisition, a Sig P220R in .45 ACP.

00 buck is only a waste of money if you don't hunt. But as a hunter i have tons of various buckshot in the house.

If I am pulling the trigger to defend myself, i want the intruder not only stopped, but dead or soon to be. You may not be convicted criminally, but if they survive a good lawyer can take everything you own in a civil suit.

All a matter of opinion but 00 buck for home defense is overkill. No need for the extra recoil and fewer pellets than number 7. A round of number 7 is more than sufficient. I know two guides who have been shot with bird shot. They say the pain is blinding and you just lie still praying not to die.

No need to act like Rambo. Remember the deadliest round statistically is the .22. Favored round of most spy agencies during the Cold War. No recoil. Fairly quiet, little collateral damage and so light it bounces around popping holes in organs... But strong enough to go through a skull. Plus still the cheapest round to practice with and shoot. An important concern for many now a days.

Not saying 00 buck won't bring down attacker just saying there is no need for that much firepower and mess :-)

In a high stress situation, as a home invasion, I would rather point and blast with my shotgun then risk a missed shot. But if for some reason my shotgun fails, my Springfield 1911, or XDs are back ups. But if I only had access to a 22 I keep 2 50 round drums loaded for my MP15-22.

I'm not worried about the mess I might create protecting my family. Spackle and paint will take care of that.

Picking up my pistol tomorrow. In Maryland, "The Free State", my 7 day waiting period took 44 days. So sad. I want to play with my new toy but ammo is hard to come by here. Anybody else having issues?

Before I got rid of my guns, the only ammo I could find were 12g. It took over a month to have any other ammo shipped to me.
