New potential owner, need your opinions and advice...

Hey all,
I'm pretty new to all this Jeep stuff so please forgive me if I say anything ignorant or incorrect. But I've been looking at this 1998 Wrangler Sport for the past couple days. The guy is selling it for $4500, it's an automatic and it has about 126k miles. I test drove it yesterday, checked everything out, and took some pictures. The engine, not surprisingly, is still clean and very strong sounding. Transmission feels like it shifts perfectly fine. Interior could use a bit of work but thats not a big deal. My only real issue is the rust. I'm in socal right now, and the Jeep has been here for a while now too but it was originally from IL where it had to deal with the snow and salt. Pretty much all the rust is on the underside and to me it just looks like kinda bad surface rust, but my eye is very untrained. But if thats the case, from what you can see, does it look fixable with a wire brush and that POR-15 stuff I've read so much about? Thats the only thing keeping me from getting it right now. Any info is appreciated!

hey dude move this post to a different area like the standard TJ area and you will get more hits most people dont dig around here much but people are always on the TJ forum section and will be happy to take a look... in terms of the Jeep, bad rust is bad news... you should also lift up the carpet where the floor boards are on either side in the front and look for rust there, mine rusted out this summer and i have to fix it and im from wisconsin so i deal with the same stuff as IL does, surface rust can be fix without much issue but if it is deeper and on the frame then it can be a huge problem and can cost you a lot to fix... you live in socal so you should be able to find a Jeep with little or no rust at all... i dont think the price is to bad depending on how deep the rust is, its not worth it if the rust is bad, some people it takes weeks or months to find the right Jeep so dont rush it, good luck i hope this helped

You might be able to clean that rust up on the frame... maybe take a wire grinder wheel and put it to work on those spots and then spray about 2-3 coats of Rustoleum on it.

Based on the pictures, the rust you have is not bad at all and can be fixed with a little elbow grease. I scuff and paint my undercarriage every spring.

That sounds like a great price for a Jeep with those miles. It just looks like it needs a bit of TLC.

Buy it! The rust isn't that bad. Put the por-15 to it, but be sure to wear gloves and long sleeve shirt when you do, it won't come off!

rust

Hey like bergy said. You are in socal, wait for another jeep to come along without all the rust, save yourself the headache. You can save all that time for wheelin and upgrades.
