Poison Spyder Build TJ

Install on the front bumper also had smittybuilt flatties on after plastic flares now going to 3" DeFender Flares with Crusher Corners and Rock Knockers with Sliders

These things fit like a glove! all bolt on as well as nutserts provided for unreachable areas. Flat LED's for the rear, also mounted the Tag and new tag light to the spare tire carrier.

front fenders pre-cut from smittybuilts flatties (PSC's DeFenders don't require nearly as much cutting as their competitors which is great)

Also the new style DeFenders give you 3 MORE inches of wheel well in the back of the front tires! the set comes with a relocating bracket for the battery trey

How was the install of the front fenders? I ordered a set today, to open up the front wheelwells for my oversized tires.

Pretty easy, there is less cutting involved with these then any other flatties out there. Once you remove the battery tray and the driver fender bracket everything falls into place. Having the open channel in the side of the DeFenders also helps with install

I'll post a Pic of how much more I had to cut vs the DeFenders

That makes sense, since the Smitty tube fenders were an exact knock-off of the old Poison Spyder tube fenders. We get the same gap on the couple of Jeeps we've put DeFenders on after having previously had Tube Fenders. With a clean install on previously-uncut fenders there should be no gap. For those of you with a gap because you're upgrading from Tube Fenders, a strip of sheetmetal and a couple of pop-rivets will fill that gap fairly easily.

Do you have to worry about mud/dirt/etc getting between the DeFenders and the old fenders that were cut? One of my concerns getting moisture and dirt/mud in there once everything is on.

Did you do anything to prevent or minimize that or is it a non-issue?

I'd say it's a non-issue. 99.9% of buyers won't be replacing tube fenders with another aftermarked fender. Most will be replacing OEM fenders, much like I am. I'll post up my pics, as soon as I can get them painted, and you should see a beautiful, clean, innner fender with full coverage.

Regarding the Originating Poster's gap, unless they salt the roads in his environment, AND, he drives a lot during winter, I wouldn't worry about that gap.

Exactly what Dusty said, a piece of sheet metal will suffice in covering the gap. If your going from stock flares to DeFenders you won't have the gap that I have, I'll post a picture of what I did to cover the gap soon. Moisture isn't a big concern either, if you are worried about rusting, go with the aluminum DeFenders instead of steel, save on weight as well as not having to worry about moisture content as much

Now that everything is bolted and taken its madin voyage i wanted to list some pros and cons of the DeFenders as a unit. I feel i didn't touch enough on how the install went with them but more of an over view of the whole wrap :whoops:

PROS:

Extra wheel well clearance!
No edge rubs on tires when fullly stuffed!
Light weight (Aluminum!!)
Ease to install!
Great customer service at the PSC compound!
Lined up PERFECT with Rock Knockers
Did I mention extra wheel well clearance!?!?

CONS:

I powder coated all my hardware, in doing so the counter sunk bolts didn't sit completely flush in the countersunk holes
In powder coating these I stripped out 1 stainless steel bolt head on the flat surface where the hood covers
I didn't have these a year ago! haha

The PSC BFH (Built For Hammers) front bumper had a GREAT approach angle on the culverts and just barley got scuffed at the bottom edge, talk about awesome angles!

So I haven't had much time for any add ons to the Jeep but there is a definite HUGE drive train upgrade incoming with new suspension. Just a reminder: This is my daily driver, so for the most part I have no 2nd option for a vehical to use durring down time. Also an Engineering student at UNF so time is short bethween school and work.
I just ordered a 5.5 X Factor Long Arm kit from Rock Krawler Suspension. There customer service was awesome! Jeremy is the bomb. Been looking into axles and think I've decided on a 60 front with a 14 bolt rear end. 1 tons may seem like much now, but I'm planing for the future. If I go 40's I'd want to be ready rather then getting 44's and have to swap all over again.

Axles front and rear have 4.88 gears and a new Detroit in rear. (personal friend seen with my own eyes). With the Rock Krawler kit old perches are cut off while new rear cross members are wended on. I feel it would be a 1000 times easier to do the axle swap with suspension swap (short arm to long arm) in 1 shot..

any thoughts?

Yes.
To fit 40s, you'll need a wheelbase stretch, even with the DeFenders up front, I had to push my axle forward, and the back axle has been moved back several inches. 37s fit fine in stock location.

Also, if you go 60/14, are you narrowing them, or leaving full width? Full width means new beadlocks/wheels AND it will be stoopidly wide for a daily driven rig. Mine are narrowed, and still wide. I'm 79" outside of tire, to outside of tire. 40 x 13.5 wide.

Yeah I'm not sure what exactly I'm gonna do with them just yet. I agree they are crazo wide cause they are full size. Even with a heavy positive backspacing I will be in the 67-75 WB length :-/ I know I'm poor, I'm still scoutin for axles but I do think I'm set on these.

Can you send me some close ups of your 60/14? I'm nosie.

Previously posted was a question about the gap on the pass side fender. it was erking me (my OCD) but its fixed now. just wanted to say thanks for noticing. its always nice to get 2nd opinions and another eye on some things.. wish I checked, double checked, and rechecked the 1st time tho.

also had some silver in the diff fluid. tore down the front end to inspect, everything came out ok. I'm led to believe its just from the install of the new locker and some wear form me beating the piss out of it. so i changed the shafts anyways lol

1st one is of the before shot of the gap.. I ended moving it up about 1/4 of an inch. has a curved lip to it so still looks low but I SWEAR its right with the body line!

and the last is a Detroit Tru Trac locker

Build looks great! I just looked through the pictures, I haven't really read anything yet. I've been thinking of doing the same thing with my TJ so I will be checking up on this thread for progress keep it up!

Is PCS still using those incredibly soft allen head bolts? After all the money you pay, I'd like to see better hardware.
