Sorry about Cherokee :-( I've lost my share too, they say grief is the price we pay for love...
Maybe we should have a pet meet and greet?

Awww, what a beautiful pup, so sorry about your loss. I definiteily know how you feel, I miss my Maggie (chocolate lab) every day, and she's been gone for 10 years now.

I live in South Eastern NY. Long Island to be exact. We are all over the place it seems.

I agree with the Shearpamela's comment "grief is the price we pay for love".
Ain't it the truth? Cherokee was such a good girl, and although I have Sunday,
no other dog ever replaces the love one has had for that special individual companion.
The dog that follows the lost best friend becomes a new best friend in their own way, but I shall never forget that unconditional love that Cherokee, and Poco before her, endlessly gave to me. They are both buried in my back yard where we all played together. It hurts but we never want to forget.

I felt the pain of the loss more than once, and I said never again, but the close friendship is worth the inevitable grief that follows.

I've lost 4 in the last 5 years and held them all as they were euthanized, our whole family was in the room. It's the final act of love we can give them, the peace of a painless exit. My last girl was 14 and having seizures daily, and I agree they can never be replaced but their passing makes a new opening for another dog that deserves love. We deserve the love they give us too :-)

So sad. I just lost my Daisy Mae at the end of April. She was almost 17. I'd had her for 16 years. These are my 2 favorite pics of her.

That is a tough situation. I really feel that pain, and I am sorry for your losses. Poco was euthanized, kids in the room, and they were hysterical. I felt so bad, for Poco, the kids, myself, the whole loss. When Cherokee was approaching the end, I prayed that she would pass peacefully in sleep, so I would not have to do that again. I pat her head that night, and said my good byes, with a kiss on her snoot. Interestingly my prayers were answered as she passed during the night. I buried her the next day with a small service, and read "The Dog's Prayer" aloud. Hard to forget. Dogs are wonderful creatures, and they bring out the best in good people. Are you familiar with "The Dog's Prayer". It is actually very touching.

A friend sent it to me. I have a copy of it with her ashes. My husband also wrote the story of Daisy for me. I'm going to have it bound. A dog is probably the best friend a person could have. I know her little brother Aston Martin still misses her.

I am posting "A Dog's Prayer" for those unfamiliar with it.

A DOG'S PRAYER

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for although I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have be do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not
reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer
thirst. Feed me clean food so that I may stay well to romp and
play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready
willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in
danger. And beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to
deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you.
Rather, hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the
merciful boon of eternal rest and I will leave you knowing with the
last breath I draw, my fate was every safest in your hands.

I love Pointers, my husbands hunting buddy has two. It's amazing to watch them flush birds on the hillside, the stamina of those dogs is incredible.

Did anyone know that it's a proven fact that people with pets (especially dogs) live longer? Well it's true!

Congrats on Cabela, she's adorable! It's good to see so many devoted pet owners on here.
Thanks for the Dogs Prayer, it is beautiful and true. I've read The Rainbow Bridge but hadn't seen the prayer.
I'll try to post this touching video but I'm on my phone - may not work. If not I'll post later. It's Jimmy Stewart on Johnny Carson reading a poem he wrote for his dog Beau.

Cabela is an absolute mush. What a playful innocent look. Great looking puppy.

Kaiser is one handsome pup. Great colors, so alert, and obedient. A real loverboy I am sure.

I have heard Mr. Stewart talk about his dog Beau many times in interviews.
It just shows what an impression a wonderful dog can have its' owner, and the behavior of the dog is so effected by its' owner's love, consistency, and trust. Truly Man's/Woman's Best Friend.

Agreed
Definitely heard that to be true. Hug your pet, care for your pet, love your pet, and live longer as a result. It reduces stress, and lowers blood pressure, and promotes homeostasis.

Some say, it even grows hair. NOT.... just testing.

The husky is my brothers. She cut herself on glass yesterday. Took 50 stitches and staples to close it. The other dog is mine. His name is bandit.
