PRESS RELEASE: BOY SCOUT STEPS IT UP!!
Eagle Scout Project Provides Direction for 4 Wheelers
Scott Cowan of Boy Scout Troop 88 in Placerville CA, which is part of the Golden Council Empire, performed his Eagle Scout project the weekend of August 13th 2011 on the Rubicon Trail in El Dorado County. Braving warm temperatures and dry Sierra Nevada conditions, he and his crew were able to walk the trail and completed the project in record time. His project consisted of posting mileage markers every ½ mile on the Rubicon Trail, starting from Wentworth Springs and ending at the intersection of the Rubicon Trail and Barker Pass Rd. By having to learn to use a GPS unit and identify the actual locations on the ground, Scott was able to accurately locate each sign so that off highway vehicle users would know how far along the trail they are. The signs were supplied by the Rubicon Trail Foundation and funded through a grant from the OHMVR Division of California State Parks. In total there are now 24 signs that are placed along the trail. The reason for this project is for public safety. With the mileage markers in place, people that are using the trail will know where they are located on the trail and can identify where they are in case of emergencies.

The Rubicon Trail is considered the crown jewel of off highway driving. The Rubicon has been used since the 1890’s as a road and has been a motorized road since 1908. The Rubicon Trail Foundation was happy to have had the chance to help out Scott and support this project to become an Eagle Scout. Rusty Folena, a founding director of RTF said “We thought that this would make a great project because of the large amount of people that visit the Rubicon each year, many of them not knowing really how long the trail is or where they are located while they are driving on the trail.”

Rubicon Trail Foundation appreciates the hard work done by Scott Cowan of Troop 88, Mike Bassette, Scott's parents, Sean and Chris Cowan, the support of OHMVR Division of California State Parks and the many Friends of the Rubicon volunteers.

The Rubicon Trail Foundation was formed in 2004. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to the future health of the Rubicon Trail and our mission is to enhance the future health and use of the Rubicon Trail, while ensuring responsible motorized year-round trail access. FOTR and RTF works with individuals, 4x4 clubs, organizations, and agencies to maintain and manage the trail. Our Officers and Directors represent a wide variety of Rubicon Trail OHV users, land owners, county representatives, manufacturers, and event organizers.
