When I Was stationed there I would go to the EOR (off Memorial Trail, same road as the BX and Commissary) where they used to allow archery and dove hunting. There are a few minor trails back in there that while maybe not all that challenging, do lead to some pretty views of Choctawhatchee Bay.
We also used to go on North 285 where the old railroad tracks were and there were several places along that dirt road towards C-6. Just be careful of closed gates! I worked at the C and D ranges so I knew all the places to go back then but, as earlier stated, head over to Jackson Guard and talk to them as I'm sure all the rules changed since I was there last (2004).
I did some research on a couple of other forum and I found this
Jackson Guard -(850) 882-4164 or (850) 882-4165- for information about the area and about getting the passes you need to be allowed to hunt, fish, camp, and wheel int here.
Hey Guys,
Ive grown up here in the niceville/eglin area my whole, now 25...here is what ive learned as far as riding and 4 wheeling on the reservation goes...it should be kept to trail riding as anything more than that witnessed by one of many authority figures out on the reservation can and will likely end up in some sort of ticket (unless your lucky enough to get an airman of some sort, they are normally more likely to let you go)...basically dont repeatedly hit the same holes over and over again rutting them out...these sort of things can and will get your rez pass revoked (if you've managed to get it before going out) along with fines. Jackson guard tries really hard to manage the land properly so it can be hunted and fished by everyone (remember not everyone is as fortunate as us to own a jeep :dance including those who don't have 4x4 capabilities.
Now that ive made it sound super up tight, its really a good place to go out and have a little fun...and bend the rules a little unk: . I've had some great times out there and definitely broke our fair share of tow straps, cables, and dreams.
I grew up down there in the late 60s and early 70's. No rules... nothing but a locked gate or two every once in a while. We often ran with just pickup trucks with aired down ballon tires and 2 wheel drive all over those areas. Most of my time spent in the area out near Seminole on out to Defuniak Springs and so forth. Old bombing ranges, Special forces training camps and Turpentine taps. Those were the days. Nothing like it is now. This was long before the bridge over to Destin existed. The area was really the backwoods of Florida in those days. We called it LA for Lower Alabama... and all us locals were referred to as "fish heads" and "Boggy Boys".
I currently run it, just make sure you go to Jackson Guard in Niceville and get a permit ($12 each for every person 16 and older for a recreation permit) and when you do they give you a big map with where you can and can't go and further definitions of the rules, also they have a website that details daily site/trail closures which you should check before going wheeling
Heads up active duty airmen only pay 4 bucks and they're are some great rides out there! As a matter of fact my group will be making a run out on some of the trails next month y'all hit us up at panhandlemudders on Facebook !
Looks like fun. Just had a baby so jeepin days are few and far between for now... Definitely interested in group rides around Eglin, so hit me up, I'll make it if I can.
I ride the Eglin reservation about once a month and Stelckinator summed it up very well in his post.
If you're local, Blackwater State Park up in Crestview has a few more challenging trails and it's free. If you're on Eglin, I'm parked down by Postal Pointe Mon-Fri right by the RV lot feel free to stop by.
can you give me some better details on the blackwater state park, I rolled up there last weekend and was not impressed. Just a bunch of dirt roads and one decent obstacle to climb up.
Can someone who is familiar with the Eglin trails make a list of good ones and where they begin?
I live in Niceville, have a range pass, a Jeep, and buddies ready to go!
