Angry Outerbanks NC Beaches driving Permit

So, it's just my luck. I bought my first 4X4 jeep in hopes of driving on the beaches of the Outerbanks NC.
Now there is a regulation requiring an annual $120 or weekly fee of $50.
What the hell. It's bad enough that my jeep gets 13mpg as it is.
My daughter lives in Corolla and I hope she can secure me a resident permit. But, I'm sure the vehicle will need to be registered in NC and it's not.
Does your local beaches require permits to drive on the sands?

Dang Federal Govt....fees and more fees.

Your thoughts on this?

That's a bit steep. $6 bucks a day, or $40 annual pass (30 if purchase early). I get one every year

Yeah I agree that $50 per week is outrageous. Especially when I only plan to do it for a day.
I assume the rate you pay is in Fla.?

x2. Only issue is the beach driving is just that. You cannot go into the dunes or the like. St Auggie beach is a nice long drive, hell you could hit Daytona almost....
Vilano not so much....You can ride that whole thing in about 15 minutes give or take and that is only due to speed limit otherwise it would be a 2minute run..
But the day or annual pass will allow you on both beaches.

Wow that sucks. I'm heading to Wilmington first weekend in May and I planned to spend a Saturday at beach. So I'll have to pay $50 to cruise a few hours? Not excited about that at all.

Outerbanks NC permit commences today 2/15/12

qouted from linked source below

"When the rule becomes effective on February 15, 2012, an ORV permit will be required to operate a vehicle on the designated ORV routes at the Seashore. Permits can be obtained beginning on February 15 at any of the three NPS ORV permit offices located at Coquina Beach, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Visitor Center (Buxton), and the Ocracoke Visitor Center. These offices will be open year-round, seven days a week, except Christmas Day, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with expanded hours on weekends and holidays during the summer season. The cost of an annual permit (valid for the calendar year) is $120. A 7-day ORV permit (valid from the date issued) will cost $50."

Wow, this is terrible news. I have been going to the Outer Banks forever and the loss of beach driving (by way of that fee) is not cool. From what I can find, it seems to be specific to the Cape Hatteras area beaches, but looks like that includes Oregon Inlet where I have been numerous times. I can't find anything saying that Corolla beaches are included. That may still be open to anyone, with no permit required.

Let me know if you find out for certain. I was really looking forward to that but not paying $50 for half day of riding on beach

I don't mind the fee as much as the reduced access. Much of the beach is no longer accessable to 4wd vehicles, even some of the most popular beaches are off limits. On top of this if two birds even look like they want to mate there are further beach closures and this is during the peak of tourist season. It's crazy. Miles of beach are closed for a handful of birds.

I don't think the Corrolla beaches are affected. They are not part of the Hatteras National Seashore.

Just curious, what was the fee prior?

NC is quickly becoming a very expensive state in which to live (as least in Wake County). It already has one of the highest income, property, personal property and gas taxes in the South or even some Northern states.

Now what little bit of NC beaches we are allowed to drive on costs an annual $120 or weekly $50 fee?

Time to start voting the bums out!

Wilmington is a long way from OBX, and isn't part of the area covered by the permit. The only place near Wilmington to drive on the beach is Carolina Beach. There is a fee there as well, but I don't know how much. Google it before you go.

Oh thanks. For some reason I was under impression they were close. Be my first time taking my Jeep to NC with exception of Charlotte. Thanks dude.

There are 2 driving beaches in Wilmington, Carolina Beach Fremen Park (North End) is $20 per day and Kure Beach at the south end is $12 per day.

The process is still ongoing - access organizations have filed suit against the National Park Service on the grounds that they broke their own rule-making process, and a bill has been introduced in Congress (HR 4094) to restore pedestrian and motorized access. More information at Cape Hatteras: Access groups sue to stop Park Service’s ORV plan and final rule

You think 120 dollars is too much to pay ?

I just paid $195 for an annual pass at Island Beach State Park. (50 bucks for 3 days.)

All things considered, flanked generally by AC to the south, Newark/NY to the north, and Philly to the west, I'm happy that motorized beach access is allowed ANYWHERE in this state, at ANY cost.

Before y'all start screaming, remember this is NEW JERSEY lol. And I DID say "all things considered."

(And its a beautiful beach. If nothing else, I can say the State has done one good thing by preserving it, and keeping it open to the public ....)

Kure beach and Fort Fisher are great areas! My uncle's house is in Kure and we used to go there every year. Great beach to four-wheel on and play on! I've got some photos of the beach and surrounding areas. Be sure and go to Squigley's Ice Cream Parlor in Carolina Beach! It is AWESOME!

Doubt we'll ever drive out to the point at Hatteras again. The loop used to let you go left out the first ocean side ramp and drive the whole way around the point, and come back out the sound side trail at the fire tower. All without crossing dunes or affecting nesting areas. Now the point is pedestrian only.

I remember first hearing of the piping plover and joking that they would eventually close the whole island to humans to protect the birds.
Well now. Here we are.

If anything, I do appreciate that they tied some common sense beach driving equipment into the requirements. The number of morons out in the past 5 years has been crazy. Although, I'm sure some see my PA tags and assume I'm a moron as well...

Can't wait for the 7 minute video.

NC Corolla is free

Took the wife and daughter to the Corolla offroad beach and it was free.
I had purchased the annual permit ($120) but that is not required on the offroad beaches of Corolla NC.
Awesome time
Horses were meandering on the shoreline and even though the restriction of a 50' rule we parked as the horses walked within 20' feet of the jeep.
Amazing experience.

Called up up the ORV today and its a $150 fine if they catch you without a permit..

Not only do I pay taxes 7 other ways on my jeep DMV, Gas tax, personal property ect. now I have to pay another tax to drive on a beach that my taxes already help pay to maintain.??

Stayed down in Waves, NC last week. It looked so weird coming off of the Bonner bridge and not seeing the vehicles all lined up by the inlet. Lots of ramps were closed too down on South 12.

It was. Not a single truck on that whole point.

Bought my wife a few scratch off lotto tickets in VA, she hit one for $50. Free beach access permit!!!
There was a lot less trucks out there this year, yet still, I had some moron in a Liberty park literally 10' from us, when there was a whole open beach. Oh well, some people just don't get it.
I know it's not the TJ, so it's a little off topic, but it was a lot more comfortable with a wife & 2 kids for the ride down there...

Beautiful! thinking of driving up there next weekend; with Labor Day behind us, we're hoping for less crowds/lower prices up that way.

I am actually a very big participant in the fight against these OUTRAGEOUS regulations on Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area. Please read more and sign out petition at Support Free and Open Access!! The point has reopened recently, however, ALL inlets are closed to vehicles and pedestrians! Please read more and help us!

If anyone has any questions or such, please let me know, I have been going to Hatteras 5+ times a year for 20 years as I am a property owner down there! I would be more than happy to talk with people about this. We are currently working with the Sportsman Channel to get some TV time about the issue.
