1990 YJ Axle swap

I am trying to gather as much info as possible before I start buying parts. I have a set of dana 44's out of something Jeep in the 80's wide trac with the passenger side drop front. I have installed the rear Dana 44 and it works great (needs a locker) I am now wondering best course of action..change transfer case or swap tubes & axles to change to a driver’s side drop to fit original case and add a SLA. I priced a set of 44's out of a TJ Rubi $$$$$ any suggestions??

Find a driver side drop axle. IF you find a D44 out of a late 80's wagoneer it will bolt right in and you wont have to do near the work to get it to work like you will with the pass side drop axle.

flip axle around so the pumpkin is on the driver side then cut the perches for your spring mounts and weld them on the opposite side

I thought the pinion bearing would not oil properly if you run it upside down. I will look into it

Aren't wagoneers 6 lug? I found one for $200.00 is it a direct bolt in?

Um, that will not work out too well when he tries to move the jeep in 4wd.

I have decided to buy a set of axles from a grand wagoneer. Minor modification to rear perches and I get a free brake upgrade with the Dana 44 dependability

Jimmy,

The front axle from the Grand will need the spring perches moved in 1/2" per side. On the diff side there is typically enough room to redrill the center pin 1/2" closer to the diff. You may need to grind a little of the webbing away around the diff, but it is nothing major. On the pass. side, most I have seen simply weld a piece of 1/2" thick steel to the inner side of the spring perch and redrill the center pin hole 1/2" further in.

THe grand axle CAN be bolted in directly, but it is pretty hard on the leafs being spread like that.

The pinion bearing WILL NOT oil properly if run upside down and will quickly grenade.

I almost forgot.

The other benefit of a Dana 44 rear is the Jana k4 kit. JANA k4™ Installing new sckool JK44s in your old school housing - Pirate4x4.Com

With a cryo treatment of the R&P, you'll end up being very close in R&P strength to the venerable Dana 60 without the weight.

THis will work for both front and rear LP and he has a kit to install the Dana 50 r&p into the HP 44 housing.
