Nearly everything IIRC.

New radiator, computer, obviously wiring harness. I believe the bell housings are the same so the trans should work. don't quote me on that though..

Why are you swapping?

Do a V8 swap. You're changing out the same things plus motor mounts and trans.

What tire size are you running? What your axle gearing? Auto or manual? If manual when are you shifting in the rpm band?

Well yeah. Our motors aren't built for high RPM HP they were built for low end torque with the "powerband" between 2000 and 3000. That's where you'll get the most power out of your engine in a useful way. Just like how some cars redline at 9k RPM. Ours is 5.5-6.

Can't help you on Cost and all. But a common v8 swap for our tjs is an ls1/ls2 corvette engine from what I've seen.

you're looking at anywhere from $3000 for used engine, new trans, wiring harness yourself, labor yourself, to $19,000 for brand new 450HP ls3 corvette engine, New transmission, so on, so forth.

The most common swap? That would be the chevy 4.8/5.3 v8. You can get these engines from all chevy suburbans 2000 to today and I think all chevy silverado/Sierra extended cabs. The regular cabs came with the 4.3 v6.

These engines put out about 300 hp which is plenty enough for our jeeps... Unless you want to just go all out.

Novak conversions is a great website to look at for information!

I would do the math on selling yours and buying a 4.0L vs the cost to do the swap.

And factor in the time and expertise you have for labor.

Novak has a great article on the TJ engine swap here. They seem to think the 4.3 V6 or 5.3 V8 is the best upgrade possible.

"The 4.0L is a good motor but hardly anything to write home about."

From what I've read in this forum, it's not really a super popular idea to get away from the 4.0.

I'm still shopping for a Jeep & would use it as a toy primarily. I find a LOT of good 4 cylinder TJs out there for really reasonable prices (around $4k) with lift kits, good bodies, tires, etc. I'm finding a few of deals with the 4.0, many of which are pretty beat up, and their always cost $1k or $2k more. Seems like the Novak bolt on upgrade to a 4.3 V6 would be a good upgrade for about the same cost. If you upgraded the transmission too (to one with OD), it sounds like it would really help drivability across both low & high range. I'm starting to consider a purchase of a Jeep with a 2.5l, then a future winter project of an engine upgrade.

Prefer before.. Have you checked out LSX WIly's... Pro charger, nitrous and I believe he started with a 5.3... That thing is extreme.

All I want is to be able to keep those pesky Prius drivers from cutting me off around town...and maybe smoke a mustang or two..

LSX Willys is out there smoking corvette z06's...
