Hahaha........that's not even my mower. I have a riding mower. That's the previous tenant's and I haven't gotten around to getting rid of it. I'd hate to think about mowing this lawn with nothing but a push mower, self-propelled or not....

I rebuilt the calipers and installed new brake pads then re-mounted them to the axle. Gonna wait on getting the new TJ mounts welded to the housing until I get settled into my new place at the first of June. Hoping to get this axle under the Jeep sometime this summer......

I want to take the Jeep out before I install the 8.8 and DESTROY the D35. Just for fun. It would be interesting to see how much carnage I can put the D35 through before she gives up the ghost.

great looking axle- the first thing i would suggest though, is take a wire wheel and remove all the paint around the area where the axle tube goes into the diff. housing, so it can be welded - mine didnt spin, but why chance it?

4x4Wire - Fixing The Weak Link In The Ford 8.8 Axle Housing

FYI -mountain offroad has parking brake cables - they work great in a yj - not sure if the tj set up is the same.

as far as heavier axleshafts_ I have been running 37 mtr's for 6 years with stock axleshafts. I did go to my local junkyard and get a set of axleshafts for spares though, just incase, i think i payed about 60 bux for them - disc brake or non disc brake, doesnt matter which you use as a donor vehicle.

I only painted a light coat of paint on the housing to ward off rust. It'll be wire-wheeled when the mounts get welded to the housing. And I'm planning on welding the tubes to the centersection. I've heard that's a common thing to do when setting up these 8.8's. The company I'm ordering my mounts from includes the parking brake cables with the kit, along with a SOLID diff cover. Seems pretty complete.

It's easy...I've busted 4 D35's now.

I have ACCESS to a tow rig. My daily driver is a Ford Ranger. Don't think she'll pull the Jeep on a trailer. But I'm all for killing the D35. Better do it someplace closer than Disney though. Maybe we can kill it over at Tuttle.....

Tuttle is fine with me. Still never been there.

You want shattered spiders, snapped shaft or just grenade the whole housing?

I want to DESTROY the entire D35. All while getting it on video.

I've got a winch. If I have to, I'll winch/drag the Jeep onto the trailer. That is, unless I can find someone who wants to buy a D35 with 3.73's. Nobody wants D35's though.

Cavediver. Could you point me in the right direction to learn, or tell me outright why the Ford 8.8 is so popular in the Jeep crowd? I have a friend who derbys and dosen't understand why Jeep guys would want them. He said that in his experience they are weak. He also said that he only has experience with 8.8s that have drum brakes. So that could be the difference between new and old 8.8s. Please enlighten us.

8.8s with drum brakes have 27 spline axle shafts. The 8.8s with disc brakes have 31 spline.

They are popular in the jeep crowd because they are similar width and the same bolt pattern. They are capable of holding up to 37" tires with little problems. And they aren't a Dana 35.

Later model 8.8's have disc brakes, so it's an instant brake upgrade. Granted, they're rear brakes and only account for roughly 20% of your braking power, but disc brake maintenance is much easier/quicker than drum brake maintenance (in my opinion).

A lot of 8.8 rearends that came out of a V8 Explorer (like mine) have a posi-locker already installed.

The V8 rearends have beefier 31 spline axleshafts as opposed to the wimpy D35 axleshafts.

Only 1" shorter in overall length to that of a stock D35.

Same bolt pattern as the TJ so your wheels will bolt right up without modification or having to buy new wheels.

Tons of aftermarket support.

Even stock, they can take some serious abuse. There are already two posts on this thread where the poster has mentioned running 37" tires on stock axles. Superior Axle has a Super 88 kit that can be installed in a couple of hours in your driveway that has chromoly axles, c-clip eliminators, etc. and it's had rave reviews by a number of online magazines/JP magazine, etc.

Oh yeah, and they're CHEAP. I only paid $250 for a low mileage V8 Explorer rearend with disc brakes and a locker.

Since my goal is to be running 37" tires sometime in the semi-near future, the 8.8 is the right rear for me. If I was going to be running anything bigger, then a D60 would probably find its way under my Jeep.

Hope this helps. I too have a few derby friends (my redneck hillbilly buddies), and they just weld the spider gears in their rears together and torture their derby cars. I doubt even a D60 would last long with the abuse derby cars are subject to........

Said in a different way from above, you get a D44 (strength wise) axle for cheap.

Change the brackets out and voila. Big upgrade over a D35C.

This was where he was headed on his own. After we were talking about it again last night, (we had a conversation last week about this) he started doing some research online and found out it was 31 spline. He asked how many splines were on a D35 to which I responded "hell I don't know, I don't even have one of those." Thanks so much for the input. I'll share this info with him.

the blanket statement that drum brakes are automatically have a 27 spline axle is NOT correct. I know this because I pulled my spare axle shafts, for my 31 spline disc brake 8.8, from a drum brake ford explorer - i think it was a 96. I am not sure on the exact years (94-2001?) 8.8 disc and drum brake axle shafts are the same for these years

Lol......I'm waiting to get settled in to my place in Salina. I start moving this Friday.

Plus I no longer have access to a welder, so I'm going to have to pay someone to weld them up. Now all I have to do is find SOMEONE who can do it.......
