Bumper build question

My buddy and I are going to build our own front and rear bumpers for our jeeps.

98' TJ: his
90' YJ: mine

We are going to make them from 2"x4" steel. So, is 1/8" thick steel too thin for this?

Depending on what your trying to accomplish with your bumper. I would use 3/16 for the bumper and 1/4 for the winch plate. We have a lot of trees and rocks that jump out at you up here in Central British Columbia though.

Cheers

Be careful of how heavy you make it. You don't want weaken the front springs especially if you plan to mount a winch as well.

Im tryin to do the same but just the rear. I can't find anybody round me to by a piece of tubing from. Im lookin for a 2x3 or 2x4 3/16 piece of tubing about 4.5 to 5 foot long. I've found places online buy is that the way I should go. I found one place that I think will actually make the angled cuts I want at no extra charge. One place is $28 n the other is $18 but don't know what shipping is. Its still cheaper than buying a bumper from say jc whitney.

Using 2x3 or 2x4 is not a bad idea for a rear bumper and the cuts aren't hard to make for a tapered angle. I've done with just a steady hand of a torch. Cut it just right and you can use the uncut 2 inch side to seal up the wedge you cut out.
