CJ/YJ truck build...

Hey guys been lurking on here for a while, figured Id get a few pics up of what I'm tinkering with. This is going to be a slow build for me so bare with me on the timeframe...

Im starting this off with a pretty beat up YJ that I acquired in a trade. The po's had done a lot of hack jobs in and out of the Jeep so I don't think what I'm doing is really hurting it any worse (for the purist out there)than it already is. Worst case scenario I buy a used tub and go back to original...

Well this is what I am starting with *Warning.. she ain't Purdy

Holy huge hangers ↑↑↑↑↑

Hood and grill were pretty smashed up so I replaced w/ a CJ grill and hood, always liked round headlights better anyways...

...as you can see in the previous pics the PO had chopped up the fenders so tube fenders just made sense..

I've got more pics but out of time... I'll get some more posted later

... sooooo here comes the part that many are gonna hate me for, but I don't really care....

The PO did a real number "trimming the wheel wells" and the tub has some serious rust issues so I thought I'd go for the flatbed idea...

This is my inspiration...

except with a bed more like this...

my plans are to extend the wheelbase 6" and extend the rear frame by 8"+/- and have a bed mounted roll bar built similar to the one in the pic above..... so first things first... lets do some cutting!!!

wheel well marked out... sad my phone takes better pics than my $200 camera....

first cuts made...

even got the wife involved....

all cut up and ready for new sheetmetal, which unfortunately hasn't got here yet.....

I was surprised to find a practically brand new gas tank.... a lil muddy but not a speck of rust on it....

I also got got rid of those huge A$$ hangers and brought the body down a little... I think I'm happier with the stance now....

this is as far as I've gotten for now.... more to come as I get time and money....

Looks like a cool build. I like it when the wife helps sometimes but mostly when she leaves me alone! lol

My wife usually stays out but comes and visits me now and then lol...

So I got a little more done this weekend. Found a deal on some Dakota springs and picked up some 2x4x.25 steel stock. Guess my dumbass shoulda measured my frame and got the right size. I plan on fish mouthing the joints so I will have to fill the gap w some .25 plate I have. Total wheelbase will be approx. 110"... LONG N LOW! I plan on running 37's but will swap axles in the future to run 40's with a SOA....

here's a few pics....

Axle out...

hangers moved to rear of body mount, around 7" to the rear...

with hangers moved and with the Dakota springs wheelbase came to around 110"...

new rear frame extensions "tacked in"...

.... any questions and/or suggestions? Don't hesitate to ask or give input. Thanks for looking...

I see nothing wrong with this build. I was just happy as soon as i saw you took those 2 foot long shackles off! Holy caster angle with those on there. Keep us posted on progress.

Love the build. I made the same mistake on the 2x4 tubing so don't feel like you are alone on that one.

Thanks guys! Yeah it's gonna be a slow build but it'll get there one day. DaddyJeep I read your build LOL I feel ya pain on having to feed the kids... I'll probably go coil springs in the front when I swap my axles but leafs are easy and cheaper ! Nice build! I had also thought of running a 5.2 later on but the PO had just recently replaced the 4.2 and it has some goodies on it... Offy dual plane intake, dual headers, newish 390 cfm carb... If theres one thing I can say it runs like a champ!

I'd say the D35 is shot.... took this before I pulled the axle. I'm replacing it with an 8.8, but thought this was interesting...

lol afraid to open the cover to see.... J/K the pinion bearing is demolished I drove this thing from over an hour away when I got it...had a lot of movement when accel/decel in the gear shifter thought the trans mount was bad but it wasn't... this was the cause of the play. The pinion moves ↨ ↔ about ˝ in, as well as in/out about an inch... only a matter of time before it grenade...

got a lil done last night, sorry no pics, got the new springs mounted to the axle and in the front hangers, now I gotta figure my location for the rear hanger mounts. Also noticed that I may have to make some custom length shackles to keep it level....

Back on all fours....

Tacked in the rear hangers and mounted everything up...

....difference between the pinion and driveshaft kinda gives you an idea of how far back I am from stock...

....thinking about using this old receiver as my rear cross member....

....anyone know about shackle angles? How does this look? I plan on using boomerangs once all the mock up is done... It seems to cycle well bouncing it up and down...

Yes, I know my garage is a mess.... I call it organized chaos!

lil more got done today, mounted and welded in the rear cross member/receiver hitch, then mounted the tires and rolled it out to get a look at how it sits... Definitely gonna need some bigger tires....

Before

After....

somehow (I really really don't know) I wound up with 2 more inches of WB than I had anticipated. So instead of a 110" wb, I will now running a 112" wb....

Also got the fuel tank re-mounted...

I don't think the diff is going to contact the skid pan, but Im going to limit upward travel with bump stops to keep the tires from contacting the bed anyways... Im not a "Xtreme 4X4" by no means ...

but I do like how high the tank sits...

Any comments or suggestions ? Please feel free to add your .02

Thanks...

That looks a lot longer one you got it outside. Are you going to use the rear of the tub to finish off the cab or do you have other plans?

my rear corners were beat all to hell, another reason I decided to just cut the back end off. I bought new sheet metal corners to weld in. Im going to cut out the tailgate section and use an old CJ tailgate to create a solid backend with a "Jeep" logo stamped in the middle....... Hopefully.... well that's the plan anyways LOL

Are you going with a stepside style bed or a flatbed style?
