Exhaust Manifold removal....proper way?

I've got a Ford Truck with a large split in the right side exhaust manifold. Never replaced one of these but I hear that the bolts can be a problem because they have a tendency to break while trying to remove. They've been in there over 20 years so I'm afraid this will happen.

Any experts have some suggestions to minimize the possibility of breaking?
I've heard soak it in PB baster.
Any other tricks?

Heat the exhaust manifold with a torch around the bolt to make it expand away from the bolt. If you strip the head, weld a bolt right on top of the stripped head, the heat usually helps break it loose.
