The Jeep in the photo below is on 32's, and the trailer is on 31's.

The company hasn't made an announcement yet - I think they're planning an announcement for the week of January 12.

More about tailgates... if you look at the tailgate in the photo in the first post of this thread, you'll see it's got an embossed "SAFARI" logo on it. That's a tailgate I made because I always wanted to try molding embossed lettering, but it won't be the production tailgate for the kit. The company may offer a fiberglass CJ-style tailgate with no lettering, and of course you could always not buy a tailgate from them and install a factory or aftermarket Jeep-logo CJ-style tailgate if you wanted the Jeep logo.

I've just finished up another style tailgate that I expect they will offer as one of the options with the kit. For lack of a better name, I call this the "smooth tailgate":

I like this smooth tailgate better than the "Jeep style" tailgates, I think it gives a sleek, modern look to a classic shape. And maybe people who would be towing the trailer behind, say, a Montero, would like the less-Jeeplike look of this tailgate .

There's a possibility that before they do the full production release they'll be having a limited "pre-release" run of kits to go to people who the company decides will be good initial testers of the kit, I'm not sure, but that may be part of their announcement.

I build things like this as a hobby, I only do it for my own amusement. Doing these for sale would take all the fun out of it for me. Also I do all this work in my home garage and workshop, so I'm in no way set up for volume production.

When I'm building things I'm often approached by companies or people who want to manufacture and market what I've designed and built, so when that happens I license the rights to the company and they can take it from there. So far, I've licensed the Safari Cab hardtop, the Exogate large spare carrier/tailgate reinforcement, this trailer tub kit, and a few smaller products.

The only time I ever sell anything is when I'm done with it... like when the company has gotten their kits finalized and on the market, I'll probably sell this trailer. I'm going to keep the yellow one for my own parts hauling use, but I'll probably sell the black one.

I understand completely, I can wait on the longer version kit

I don't know if you mean the plywood reinforcements that are sandwiched inside the fiberglass around the tailgate or the plywood floor...

If you mean the plywood reinforcements, I don't know if the company is planning on including them or not. They're not strictly necessary for most applications.

If you mean the plywood floor, that's something I did to keep the costs low. The floor is not part of the kit, it's up to the buyer to get his own plywood for the floor. Saves on kit cost and saves a lot on shipping costs.

I'm hearing that the company may possibly offer the kit in black gelcoat as an extra-cost option, so if they do, you could build a black trailer without having to paint it.

The standard finish will be white gelcoat, so if you wanted a white trailer, you could just bolt the parts together and go. Or you could paint it as I've done with the proof-of-concept build.

Actually I meant the size of the black one. I would most likely paint it to match the blue on my jeep.

"The company" has sent me a roof-top tent to play with, I'll be mounting it on the trailer.

Here's a couple of shots of it set up in the house for now:

It's a really nice, self=contained unit. It's got a hinged floor platform that opens up to 94" (L) x 55" (W) x 48" (H) , a mattress pad, a ladder for access, and a travel cover for when it's closed.

Here's how it will look when it's mounted:

one word, Awesome. I love the flexibility of the trailer design. I really want a hard top like yours. Is the company planning on selling them?

Thanks!

I've licensed the Safari Cab hardtop design to Gr8Tops, which is a different company from the one I've licensed the trailer tub kit design to. Here are a few photos of one of the Gr8Tops engineering prototype tops taken recently at a Jeep show:

I have designed the Safari Cab to fit CJ-7's, CJ-8's, YJ's, TJ's and LJ's in both full-length and half cab versions. Because of the modular design, the few minor differences between the models are easily accommodated. I've made up mold master parts for few differences the CJ/YJ models require and I've delivered those master parts to Gr8Tops, so technically, there's no reason tops can't be produced for any of the aforementioned models.

The question is whether or not Gr8Tops will decide that enough market exists for them to offer YJ or CJ versions of the top. Their initial focus is the LJ and TJ in both full and half cab versions. Once they get those on the market maybe they'll decide to offer other versions, I don't know.

Back on topic (the trailer tub kits): I just got word that very soon I'll be able to announce the details of the company that will be marketing the trailer tub kits. Stay tuned...

Could you post pictures of the interior of the hardtop. It looks as though it would make the jeep feel more spacious. Also did you put a head liner or anything like that on it to give a jeep some creature comforts that some of us would like to have in our jeeps?

Yes, the Safari Cab is more spacious than the factory tops - the roof is about 3 1/2" higher than the factory top. I also installed a full insulated headliner, so it's much quieter than a factory hardtop. And because the rear wall is almost vertical rather than sloped forward like the factory top, there's more room in the cargo area as well.

Here are a few interior shots. In this shot, taken through the rear door, maybe you can see the space above the roll bar and speakers.

This next shot also gives you an idea of the extra headroom, and you can also see the carpeting on the sides below the windows, which also helps quiet things down:

And in this cockpit shot, you can see I've got room to mount my fire extinguisher on top of the roll bar conector - no way you could do that with the factory tops:

Back on topic: today I expect to be able to post details of the company that's bringing the trailer tub kits to market, along with pricing targets and dates.
