Chinaman Gulch

Ran up Chinaman Gulch this past weekend. It was a muddy, slippery, sloppy, mess. I drove really conservative too b/c it was my sons first time really offroading (he had a blast too) and I didn't want to mess up all my new armor yet. Here are some of the pics. The Jeep is looking mean. I couldn't be happier than I am with the armor and how it all turned out.

With a spring compressor and unbolting the shocks at the axle it is very easy about 20-30 mins a spring shouldn't take more than about 3-4hrs tops

I'd say easy. The front for 4" springs required a compressor for the last 1". the rear was a piece of cake and didn't need a compressor. You can rent one from most parts stores for free. Not worth buying new.

Moab

Went out to Moab for the long weekend and ran Hell's Revenge and Moab Rim. Hell's Revenge has to be one of my favorite trails now. Here are some pics from Hell's revenge unfortunately my camera died on Moab Rim and don't have anything to show for it. Did Hell's revenge w/o a single hiccup including the Escalator and Hell's Gate. Moab Rim was another story. We spent almost an hour getting two Jeeps up the Z-Turn. Just couldn't seem to find or makeup the right line. Here are some of the pics:

It was a blast check out the full story of the carnage and more pics here:
Penrose

I tested out every piece of new armor on my Jeep and it is holding up to the tests. Jeep looks abused again though.

I've been really busy with Set Them Free Off Road so I haven't updated or done much in a while. I have done a good amount of wheeling. Hit Holy Cross and crawled Cleveland Rock and also made it through Carnage Canyon. Carnage was rough though. Had to winch three times (at the waterfall before the v-notch, one other spot where I just got myself turtled and the exit). Made it out with only a slightly bent tie-rod though.

All that has changed on the Jeep is I added a Powertank and a Spiderweb Shade. Put here are some pics and a link to some videos:

Cage Ideas

Getting ready to pull the trigger on starting a cage. I have some really good CAD (I mean Snag It) Skills and used those for my concept drawings. I want to keep it as open as possible and also have some sort of removable tire carrier. I could use some ideas on what to do for that tire carrier as I have not made up my mind yet on what it should look like. All advice and ideas are welcome.

All the parts have now arrived and the install will start tomorrow. Anyone have any tips or tricks for the install, also how much PS fluid do you think I'm going to need? I was planning on grabbing 6-7 bottles of the Royal Purple EZ.

Here is a video one of the members of my club made of me at Penrose which resulted in my latest forced upgrade. When the video stops is when the steering completely let go but after watching the video I think I was having problems inside of A-hole and then by the time I hit coffin rock it was all over.

Bent the tie rod, the box developed a very loud click and the worst on the trail was that my pitman arm cracked at the splines leaving me with zero steering ability. Also had a thrashed rod end at the pitman arm.

PSC Hydro Assist with Currie/Savvy Steering and Rokmen Hi-Lines

It is finished...at least for the most part. I broke one of the bolts on the steering gear mount that I still need to pull out and source a new bolt but other than that it all seems good to go. It looks like everything is clearing and I fixed up a leak yesterday. Need to check when I get home tonight to see if there are any others. Here are some pics brief notes on the process:

Laid everything out in a manner that made sense to me (that soon became chaos and didn't matter anymore once tools made their way out of their locations but it was a good idea ).

Found a problem really quickly with the PSC kit. The output fitting wouldn't thread all the way into the reservoir. Called PSC and they sent me out a new one.

Mike started ripping off the rest of the old parts while I attacked modifying the 1.5" x 6" bore cylinder from PSC. For this I needed to cut down the post and female fitting and also cut down the male fitting so that everything cleared inside of the BMB mounts.

Then we worked on getting everything mocked up and fit into the Jeep. The PSC reservoir mounts worked really well with the Rokmen Hi-Lines but needed to be slightly modified. We needed to take one of the mounts and put a 33* bend in it to keep the reservoir vertical. Mike took it to his shop and put a perfect bend in it.

Then started making all of the lines and finishing the BMB mounts

Note that the drag link needs to be ground down to be round before the mount will fit on it.

PSC Hydro Assist with Currie/Savvy Steering and Rokmen Hi-Lines

After installing all the lines and fighting the steering gear for at least 4 hours brute force installed it. I will say that a body lift would have easily made it clear the grill but without it we had to cut about an inch up into the grill.

Then it was finally time to add fluid and bleed the system

A little over five bottles of Royal purple later we took it out for a quick test drive at 11:00 on Friday night.

Drove it over to Mikes shop to fork it and found a leak but I just used some thread sealer on the fitting and cranked it down as far as possible (I think I created threads in the reservoir to make that fitting go all the way in).

I over estimated the amount of hose I would need on the cylinder to the box and I need to come up with a way to hide that so it doesn't get in the way and replace that last bolt in the steering gear like I said above but other than that I think it is ready hit the trail.

Thanks Mike for all of your help.

Man congrats on a great LJ so far! I have the same jeep and have been debating what fenders and corners to go with. I've also been eyeing the cage building skills of a local fab shop. When I get a truck and trailer I'll hit you up as a Colorado trail guide!

Sweet LJ man and thanks!

Here is a little bit of an update on the happenings:

I've ordered seats and harnesses and started on the CAD for a cage. It isn't complete yet but haven't found the time to finish it.

The drawing is still missing a lot of the more 'complicated' tubes and the rear section of the top. I hope to try and finish it this week.
