Hi-lift bumper mount TJ

I modified a common cheap inside Hi-lift mount to work outside. All you need is basic tools, two 3" minis and a couple nuts and bolts.
first you bash them

then you tap them

then you mount them






I just herculined the tub so i will probably be painting them with that soon

Not bad... only down point of the hi-lift being mounted on bumper is how dirty it will get when going thru mud holes or any wheeling. To keep it working when needed would have to make sure it's maintained while mounted outside of vehicle.

I mounted mine on the inside behind rear seat with a set of clamps for the roll cage.

Sorry, but it makes me cringe seeing a jack mounted out front on the bumper. I've seen too many lights and "grill toys" fubared on moderate trail rides.

lights on bumper

Do you not recommend putting lights on your front bumper? I just got my first wrangler two weeks ago and wanted to put lights on the bumper along with a winch. But do you think its a bad idea to put the lights on the bumper?

Yea lights are fine on the front bumper. It's just one of those things, that yea damage could occur. But then again if your wheeling... same thing damage could occur period

Mount looks sharp. Get a cover for it if you are worried about gunk and road crap in it. It will probably be worth it so when you do use it it will not fail on you putting you at risk.

As an old wheeler told me about fog/driving lights when I got started, "Only put on what you can afford to break". You can tuck them in, set them back, mount them high. Whatever you want, but on the front, they get the front row seat for whatever you run into. Winches have flareleads to help with that, hoops and stingers usually take the brunt of a hit. Lights tend to be more fragile.

more questions

Also with my jeep I planned on lifting it and all. Want to put. 33 bf goodrich all terrain and probably a 3 inch suspension lift. What kind of lift should I get and how much would it cost. Don't want to spend a lot but want a nice one. Also want a light bar for the top of window and. Lights in the bottom corners of the window. Anyone have any ideas

I'm not to worried about it getting damaged i've been stuck in a mud hole up to it and had to dig it out already and she still works fine. I just took it home sprayed it off and wd-40'd it. I don't like having it mounted inside because once it's dripping in mud not a lot of people are gonna want it hanging behind there heads haha

I personally wouldnt mount it to the front of my bumper, even with the sleeve housing that thing will get caked in mud.

what about mounting one on the back bumper ive been thinking of taking the hoops of the back and mounting a hi-lift on the back with a cover so it wont get to grimey.

I agree, plus watch those fender benders on the road. Also I would look into a way to lock it especially being mounted on the front bumper...

Real quick question.......how many of you ACTUALLY use your Hi-Lift? I've got one, but it now sees most of its time in the garage. For me to use mine, I have to limit my suspension travel with ratchet straps. Pain in the ass. Otherwise my suspension flexes too much to even pick a tire up off the ground to change it. I just use a bottle jack. Worked for 100% of the times that I needed it, both off road and on. I think Hi-Lifts may have their uses, but they don't outweigh the negatives. My $.02

Also, I admire your ingenuity and your cheapness (I'm Scottish, so I know ALL ABOUT being cheap!! )..........However, those straps look like they'll succumb to gravity after a bit, especially when offroading with some big bumps. Just a heads-up.

i dont have a highlift (yet) but i just payed $100 to get a tow truck to get my jeep off of a log that it was high-centered on. i guarantee you that a highlift could have pulled me off the log or jacked me up enough so i could drive off it. My bottle jack did not do $hit it that situation. that is exactly the reason why i am getting a highlift, i could have $100 in my pocket right now if i had one.

I've used mine before. It's the only jack I have in my Jeep. Properly equipped you can use it for lots of things. I've got mine mounted to the back bumper.

Did you try? Or are you just saying that you didn't THINK it would do $hit?

A winch would have pulled you off the log as well..........just saying......

I'm not saying that HiLifts are useless. I'm just saying that they're mostly dead weight.

i did try the bottle jack. and im sure if i had a high lift and tried to jack it off the log it would have probably had the same outcome, but i could have used it as a winch and that definitely would have worked. we had a come-along but no chains, just tow ropes so it just stretched the tow ropes out.

and i do not have the bills to buy a winch, even if i had one it would not have worked because my front bumper was up against a tree, the jeep had to get pulled out from the back.

im gonna get the winch and its off road accessories kit, it will get me out of these situations.

If I am running a stock TJ with 31" tires (or possibly 32s with a 2" lift if I decide to do this) am I better off using a hi-lift jack, or just stick with the jack that came with the jeep? I am still consider buying the Hi-Lift for its utility as a come-along. By the way, where is the jacking point for a hi-lift? Bumper?

If you or a friend can weld, this would be a good way to go. You can get the angle iron at lowes, as well as the hardware. Depending on fabrication experience it cold probly be done in an hour or so. If you would like a parts list let me know. Think my cost was about $15.00. Atleast it's out of the way of the hills. Also lets you mount the biggest highlift. No it doesn't obstruct the view.

I am sure they have their uses too, but when used improperly (which is probably most of the time) they are capable of kicking your a$$ big time.
