I agree with having the space Just don't like to look at it. I like your design for the mounts I would just put a top plate on it and leave the bottom open to spray the mud out.

The lights are a good idea but then you have less room for air.

Another reason for the extra space is that I'm also going to add an a-frame spare tire carrier to it and with the 33"-35" tires it'll give me some space so that I don't have any worry about rubbing the tailgate. I've decided against making it into an air tank for a number of reasons, so the lights won't be a problem.
