First things first, support the axle with two jack stands, three to hold the pinion, or you can use a small floor jack!

Then, go onto taking off all the additional brake lines, calipers, and rotors. If you happen to get lucky like me they both came off relatively easy!

Then onto the hubs and inner e brake assemblies...

Well I already have one picked out but I appreciate it!

Today I got in the Rokmen Gas Tank skid and .5" BL I know Imped...

Started to work on the axle, pull all the guts out now just about to pull the carrier.

The middle bar inbetween the spiders and axle shafts is the pinion shaft, you must pull this first. It uses a small bolt to hold it in, pull the bolt then slide the bar out.

Once those are out rotate the axle shafts and the top and bottom spiders will practically fall out, once out push in on either side axle shaft and youll see the c clip, just simply slide it off and repeat for the other side. You can pull the bridges for the carrier now or later.

Once the c clips are off pull the axle shafts out. Try and hold them straight and steady and they will slide right out, because they will fall in the tube. Then once the shafts are out you can pull the horizontal spider gears out and vualah, only thing left is the carrier

I also got that skid painted, picked up new calipers, rotors and pads for the rear end and went to the midnight release of Battlefield 3

Check out this 8.8 truss. Would make it real easy and fast to get that thing in there.

Also, as near as I can tell, that's an open carrier. Not that you care since you're not going to use it.

Nice progress. Make sure you weld the tubes on the 8.8 it will save you a gear set and axle shafts later down the road.

Yeah I was reading about the s or z springs, sound tedious! Pulling the shafts and carrier was cake but man did it stink..

And 78J10 I already have that planned out, along with my truss and welded axle tubes I should be good to go for a long time

Ya they are really a pain in the @$$ when one of your spider gears falls out and the axle is already mounted under the jeep and you are the only one working on it ask me how I know

What gears are you gonna run? 4.88s?

and just for those interested...here is an LSD equipped 8.8

That looks like alot more work with the plates and springs lol. But yes, running 4.88 gears

Nice. Just as a heads up, in case you havent already read/heard about it...your cross pin that runs through the carrier might not slide back in with the new gear set. The ring gear will be thicker with 4.88s and may interfere with it. All you will need to do is see which tooth on the ring gear is in the way and knock off the inside corner of it with a dremel or file. Or you can get yourself a notched pin.

Just a heads up, I know I was a little confused/nervous when I ran into this since I hadnt heard anyone mention this before.

Can you say, Detroit auto locker? But that is a good bit of information, I hadnt thought about it, but now that you mention it, I see where there could be interference with the pinion shaft!

Sounds like you had one hell of an install lol.

The detroit still runs the pin though doesnt it? And there wasnt issue with the pinion shaft, just the ring gear.

The install wasnt bad...just your typical annoying blurps in the project haha.

Yeah no project is complete without hangups lol. I thought that the detroit replaced the entire carrier. But then again im not sure but lets hope its not the case but if it is, I know no! Only reason I said pinion shaft is because thats what ive heard that pin been called.

The Detroit does replace the carrier but there is still that pin (whatever it's called, I've never heard anyone really call it anything haha). That pin keeps your shafts from moving in and the c clips keep the shafts from moving out.
