It starts like this...

My wife and I picked up a cheap clapped out YJ with a good frame and a running engine. I finally made room in the garage last week, we moved it inside and the tear down began tonight. I've got a line on a solid tub so that's the first thing getting replaced. Right now we're thinking of doing a SOA lift, 33's, tube fenders and somewhere down the road a V8 conversion. First step is to get it back into sound shape in stock form.

I should add, this is going to be a purely recreational vehicle for us. It will by no means be a daily driver. The previous owner picked it up for the hard top and doors, the first three pictures are from his garage.

Looks like you have your work cut out for you. I love it when someone takes the time to bring one of these back from the edge. Please keep this thread updated so that we can watch it's rebirth.

Yup, we sure do. We bought it knowing it's going to be a project. I'll do my best to keep things updated. I don't take a lot of pictures while I work but I try to snap a few at the end of each session.

It's been a while since I updated and I've only had a couple of nights to work on it but I've made some progress. Interior is gutted, windshield, fenders and hood are off. Tub is coming off next, drivetrain after that and then the frame prep will begin.

I thought I was just about ready to yank the tub, still took another couple of hours to get here though. Next time I have the time to work on it I'll be unbolting and pulling the tub. There might be a couple of wires I missed but I'll find 'em when I start lifting...

It's an '89 and has the 2.5 I4. I'm scrapping that (might try to resell but it's got 291k on it so I doubt it's worth more than it's weight in scrap) and have plans to put in a Dodge 360 V8 with a Megasquirt EFI controller, NV4500, Ford 8.8 rear end and I'll probably stick with the NP231. I'm going to lift it, just not sure yet how big I'm going, SOA and 35s or a more modest SUA lift with 33s.

The current tub is junk, there's almost nothing left of the floors. I have a better one on my trailer in the driveway but it too needs a little work, just not as bad as the one that's on there now. I figure since I'm pulling the tub I might as well do a full frame up rebuild and make the build something to really be proud of.

hey, found yur build on here from Always Stucks build, looks like ya have alot of POR'n ta do!! Cant wait to see all the progress and ill be followin. Where ya located around?Im in Winchester ky, I need a fellow Jeeper doin a rebuild like this close by so i could see all the inner workings and how too's. And gain a trail buddy or two

I'm in Massachusetts, closer to Always Stuck than I am to you, sorry.

Here's today's progress, I wish I'd had the camera with me to take pictures of the lift off. I had a ratchet strap lifting the back, an engine hoist up front and everything was so precariously perched I didn't want to turn my back on it for a minute. There's one spot on the frame that I can see needs a bit of help, right behind the right side rear shock. You can see it in the pictures below.

Alright, I got the rest of the engine wiring harness off, pulled the grille and radiator and I've got the drivetrain and suspension left on the frame. The next warm day we've got I'll wheel it out into the driveway and hit it all up with the pressure washer before lifting the engine/trans/tc out and setting them aside. I'll likely reuse the tc but the rest will get scrapped with the old tub eventually.

Nice start. I'm in 1hr north of you and 6 months ahead. Check behind the steering box for rust also. Shock mounts are replacable or not too tough to fab replacements. There is a used Jeep place not too far from you in Webster that has a rotating stock of used wrangler parts reasonable. I don't have info with me (at work now) but can get it for you if needed. Good luck with the progress.

Yes, that's him. His name is Paul and it is North East Parts in Webster. He parts a lot of wranglers and if you go with cash you can get good deals. My dealings with him have been very good. I got my frame, a fender, front bumper, seat belts, etc from him. His number is 508-943-0400.

Decided to motivate myself, I put the engine and transmission on craigslist, they sold the day I posted them so I had to pull them off tonight. Time to pressure wash, strip and refinish the frame.

I'm looking at picking up a mechanically sound but cosmetically trashed Dodge Ram 1500 for the axles, motor and trans. What do people think about the D44 front axle and Chrysler 9.25 rear?

Got some work done on the tub I'm going to use. It's almost completely stripped and then will have the holes patched, paint, bedliner and undercoat applied. I'm having some issues with a few bolts on the roll bar and seat belts. I've heated them, soaked with PB Blaster, they're just not moving. Anybody got some suggestions for removing them?

That's where I run into most problems. Not having the right tools. Or time sometimes
