Jeep Sleeper

I just finished this project today. A lot of work, but well worth it!

The first photo is the Jeep loaded with room to spare.

The second shows how it is with the right seat forward, extension dropped forward.

The third shows the front part of it retracted for the road. There is a vertical support attached to the right side wall that swings out to support the extension.

I have built and dropped in the "extra bed" to the left of it, as I have a friend camping with me soon. You might wonder why I went to the trouble of cutting Haggis' (Expo) original design in half and countering leveling issues with some solutions that took some work. First of all, I can't move a 40-inch wide piece through the narrow confines of the cheap apartment sidewalks, AND I can't pick it up to get it inside. It's enough of a challenge to get the extra bed in after my bed. My bed is on the right, hence my default bed because it's long enough for me to lay on stretched out, but not the extra bed. That's for someone shorter than me. I usually camp by myself, I have just the one bed in there and can kind of sit up to read or put shoes on.

The next thing I need to figure out is mosquito netting and how to set it up. I'm ready to rock this!

That's an awesome idea, and would be cool to have, too bad I'm 6'3

Very ingenious! Especially useful for an LJ. How tall are you, and how well do you fit on this contraption? I'm short (5'5"), I'm going to have to do some measuring and see if this is a feasable option for my TJ.

Now, I have the mosquito netting up! I used small wood blocks and cord to hold up the net on the rollbar just right behind the front seats and near the rear corners, and I bungeed the front and rear ties to the windshield visor bars and liftgate hinges, respectively. This is complete for now.

Thanks! I'm excited about it!

Powertrip, it's not doable for your TJ with three exceptions. I am 5'7" or so, and I have to sleep on the right side, which is 5.5" longer than the left side. That is for an LJ giving you a max length of maybe 5'10". Subtract 15 inches for the body length of a TJ and there's your problem.

Exceptions:

1) root-top tent (RTT)
2) build a transverse-oriented bed platform that slides out to either side through the roll bars, meaning a soft top only
3) or build what I did except center the bed behind the center console and have it fold out beyond the bumper and install adjustable legs under the extension.

Well, I had a wonderful weekend at Sherwood Forest Festival out east of Austin! It was a three day weekend. We arrived on Friday and didn't get back home until Monday afternoon.

Not only is the Jeep Trail-Rated, but also Adult-Rated(tm). It is interesting how the roll bars became useful for things besides protecting the vehicle in a rollover and hanging mosquito netting.

This is at camp.
