Just got a welder

So I just got this stick welder and I wanna make something cool for the jeep. I've never welded so give me something easy but cool that I can do!! Need suggestions!

Congrats! A first welder is like losing your virginity.

How about make a bumper? A stick welder is pretty brutish so fine work will have to wait. Bumper or some rock rails maybe.

Get a good grinder and lots of wheels to clean up your work.

Make an interior rack that sits on the tub when the rear seats are out. I just finished welding mine together last night. Now I just have to prime and paint. Was a fun project.

How hard would it be to add on to the roll cage to improve its strength?

No but I am thinking of getting one. realistically tho, could I make a strong enough weld taking into consideration that I have never done this before??

Why not with stick? The one that I got is a 220volt chicago arc 1400. Got it on a trade from a guy.

Stick can be great for certain things. You can weld really thick metal very quickly, you can lay down large weld veryf fast. If properly mastered (which is difficult) it can be the strongest types of welds. Also stick is great for welding rusty metal.

It is gonna be super dirty, ugly welds for the most part. You will probably burn thru a lot of metals less than 3/16. It's just not really an ideal smal project type welder. Thats why i suggested bumpers or rock rails becuse they are usually thicker material.

If you want to do any smaller projects your gonna need to practice. I suggest finding a local metal surplus shop and buying some scrap different thicknesses. Also find a welding shop because there are different types of "stick" material.

YamJam, can you school me on what types of stick materials there are? If I were to do a roll cage, I would think I would be using thicker material right?

Dam man I wish you were close to me in NC, Idk give you all the scrap steel you need, and with enough practice, you can weld very thin stuff with your stick welder, trust me, I been welding forever it seems like, but now i am the fabricator,and don't weld much anymore, for inside the cab stuff, aluminium is best way to go, saves alot of weight, but that's a whole different chapter, need any answers about what rods to use or techniques, give me a buzz

Common electrodes used are 6010, 6013, 7018 and 7024

6010 electrodes penetrate deeply, while 6013 electrodes penetrate less. For much better bead appearance and work on higher strength steels (say for a hitch), use a 7018 rod.


The 7024 rod is the easiest to use. Also known as a "drag rod," it has a flux thast helps maintain arc length, which allows you to drag the rod directly along the work piece.

Also, all of these rods come in different diameters. You should read up on stick processes. There is a lot to it to be proficient. Thats why a lot of people buy migs, they can make a dummy look like a welder, to a point.

Typical roll cage material is dom or some use cold rolled mid steel, it is usally .120 wall. Some like thicker .25 wall for some stuff but it gets heavy really fast.

So the cage material is not really that thick. It also requires very tight joints and good penatrating welds. Most cages rely on geometry for strength not sheer bulk of material.

There are books upon books of welding info. Esab, miller and lincoln also have some online resources for some tips.

I think you can be happy with the arc welder but it is gonna take practaice.

In our shop we use 6011 for sheet metal (22ga .03) up to (7 ga 3/16) and 7018 for 1/4" and up

Don't get a pipe bender, you want a tube bender. There's a big difference. If your talking roll cage you want 1 3/4 .120 wall. Ya can use a stick welder but a wire feed will look a lot nicer.

6010 and 6011 are the same except one is ment for ac, the other is made for ac/dc. Also it will weld 1/4 in just fine just need a bigger rod and turn your amps up...ya don't need to switch to 7018

Just the standards in our Fab shop, of course most of our 7018 work is r stamped or xrayed, most of the time pressure pipe, P&G is picky

It's probably due to the material, I beleave 7018 leaves a deeper weld, or lays a smoother one any way

Tig is the nicest weld ya can lay if ya know what your doin... its a time consuming process tho... nice part is you can weld anything!! With Tig its all about the penetration.

Yeah I love it, I welded some extra chromoly braces in a 4 second mustang rollcage a few weeks ago!

To the original poster, not trying to jack your thread.. least we are still talking a out welders tho get your self a couple different sizes of 6011 or 6010 and start practicing on some scrap, when you buy the rod it will have the amp rating on the box, set your amps at tords the higher end of the spectrum. Then just work on laying bead.. once you can lay a nice bead and ya get the hang of it...then see what ya can find to build

Thanks for all the posts. I'm gonna tinker tomorrow. I'm pretty excited to weld some junk together in my garage and see if I cant lay a nice weld.

I haven't used 7018 rods before, but I have used 6013, and 6011, which I think 6013 lays a better weld.. I have a lincoln 220 volt AC225 welder. I use about 90 amps most of the time... And kfdjason, I'm close to NC 20 minutes from Charlotte.. lol

7018 has a higher tensile strength (obviously), but you will want good prep work for it... ya know clean metal surface blah blah blah crap the boring stuff I'm too lazy to do sometimes! Around here its 6010 6011 and 6013 that everyone use.... its the ranching welding rod cuz they do so well with out any prep work! Just strike and lay a bead!

Hey, what the rod number/size that works the best for trail welding. You know, when you hook up two batteries & weld with your jumper cables??

Congrats Bro!! You'll find all kinds of things to do with it. I've used mine for intalling the EVO sleeves & gussets on the front axle. Welded mounts to the frame for sliders. Welded bolts to hold the jack & shovel to front tow hooks.
Do you have a 2x2 receiver hitch??? If so, you could make a bike carrier or a gas can carrier. Here's a link to the one I welded up.
