Ive been looking into putting a cold air intake into my 98 cherokee, im not too sure but if you want a real cold air intake you have to box it in so I would assume that would at least take care of most dirt getting into the intake. Just make sure its elevated and not touching anything and you should be A-okay!
intake systems are nothing more than noise makers. They gain you zero mpg, and zero hp/tq as a rule.
K&N filters are less filter, more hype. They allow more crap in by the nature of the oiled cotton design. The dirtier they are, the better they filter. but imagine how much crap has to get by in order for them to filter as good as an OEM filter. If I were you, I'd cancel this idea.

Unless I was there and saw the actual dyno runs I would not believe anyone that said they increased horse power. Remember that multiple dyno runs will produce different results on the same vehicle so unless they averaged all the results I would be weary. I'm not saying that on high performance engines more flow won't help (I've had 2 5.0L mustangs and the intake was one of the first things to open up) but I'm unsure how the 3.8/3.6 benefit from such a mod other then letting more dirt into the intake system.
It seems reasonable to assume it would benefit the same way your mustang did unless im missing something. So lets put the hundreds of user reviews where people claim to have gained power and mpgs aside and talk about the question in this thread: dirt.
Did your mustang have engine issues because of dirt entering through the intake? K+n tells me with proper maintenance, it is just as effective as any other intake in cleaning air.
*note i meticulously maintain everything.
Im not looking to debate or argue, im only looking for information, preferably first hand about this product in order to make an educated decision for my own jeep. I dont want to have problems down the road, but if i can get that cool sound and possibly better mpg and hp without letting any more dirt than a stock intake and filter would, i'd like to go for it.
I have run K& N 's on Dirt bikes... Had thousands of miles with more then standard wear on the top end of a couple of thumpers. They air good ari filters.
they have been known to dust turbo impellers, what does that tell you?
k&N's are fine on old carb motors and dirtbikes, but you will see zero improvement on a 3.6.
the reason intake mods are great on some vehicles and not so great on others is because some engines demand more air than others. our 3.6's dont need much, our intakes are very sufficient. it would be like breathing through a 1" pipe and then switching to a 1 1/2" pipe, you are still breathing the same amount of air. my 7.3l turbo diesel will just about rip your hand off if you get too close to the intake, it does benefit from increased airflow.

one point everybody miss's is the K & N WILL help decrease water injestion. where I wheel, there is usually a lot of water fording, I mean ALOT. I live in Florida and run in the swamps and I do not have a snorkel as most of my friends do, so I have to be very careful. the K & N has stopped water from getting into my engine several times, so I keep it oiled up all the time.
I had a coating of fine dust all inside the intake tube between the filter and throttle body.
I had no noticeable gains in any way.
As said before, the K&N and other oiled media filters filter better the dirtier they get, so if you do end up going that route then do NOT clean it more often than recommended. Also, no matter what anyone says, a K&N will never filter as well as the OEM paper filter.
Check out the aFe Pro Dry S drop in filter. Better flow, better filter efficiency than a K&N, and easier to clean.

a cold air intake is designed to remove the "kinks" in the intake. that being said a new one isnt necessarily a waste. especially if you have a full exhaust. i will never run a k&n style filter. if you buy the k&n intake get rid of the filter and go with a dry filter. in my expedition with just the filter i found oil all the way in my throttle body. that means oil was getting into my intake and combustion chamber. i have been looking at intakes but only dry filter intakes.
