Oh, jealousy, jealousy... nice to see stuff moving along. I'll try to repeat it next winter (provided I have a garage big enough)

Nice. Can't wait to see it painted. Question, are you using anything for the inside of the frame? I was reading a Eastwood catalog and saw that they have coatings for the inside of the frame and I'm wondering if your going to use anything like that and how it works out.

I've been looking around the net. There's a wax coating you can put inside. It comes with a spray gun and hose you insert in the frame holes. Pull the trigger and slowly pull it back sealing it from further rust. From what I understand it's a wax, not a paint. I don't know much about it yet. If I can find it I'm going to give it a shot. If anyone knows of anything else, other than having the frame dipped(Been there done that) I'm open for suggestions.

Keep in mind, this jeep will never see the snow and I don't have any intentions of running a top. I'm building it as a toy for the weekends. I have my pickup for rainy days and winter driving. The only reason I'm even considering sealing it is for deep water runs in the trails.

Here are some random pics for anyone interested.

We used something like that in past on cars (where I'm originally from) but it was a self made mix of military grade gun grease, the stuff that candles are made of, and used motor oil. It was all heated up in a bucket and sprayed on and in with a gun while hot. Grease would conserve the surface but it's unstable and will leak under hot temps, so candle stuff was working as stabilizer while motor oil made sure it doesn't dry out and crack. There you go

I'm not sure if that's the same or not. I'm going to look around and ask some more questions. The one person that new a little about it didn't say anything about motor oil. But it's very possible that he's talking about the same thing. I do know that I don't want anything dripping out of the frame when it's done.

I'd like to have this done by April. That's only 38 days when you add up the weekends. Plus I took off work every Friday until the end of the year. That will help. Up until now I've been going back and forth between the yard work and the Jeep. Yard works done. Now it's all Jeep, so this build should take off.

Internal Frame Coating w/Spray Nozzle - Undercar Coatings - Undercar & Drivetrain
This is the stuff I was reading about. I have no idea if it works or is a waste of money.

I remember in the conversation we had that he said they used it in Europe. I be leave it was invented there. We might be getting close. I'll contact a landrover dealer and see what he can come up with. I'll also search on Mike Sanders. Thanks

I checked the web site above. It's differently something to concider. Eastwood had a couple of options. I'm sure the inside on my frame isn't as nice as the one in the picture.

Got the frame rolled over and cleaned up. Got most of the sand blasting done last night. Only did the spots I couldn't get with a wire wheel. I'll finish the sand blasting tomorrow. Camera ran out of battery but I got some pics. I'll put up more tomorrow. More than likely it will be in prime tomorrow night and paint Saturday morning.

To answer the inside the frame question. I didn't find the wax setup. So I'm going to use the frame paint from Eastwood. Something is better than nothing. I do have a camera that I can put in the frame to see how it looks when I'm done. Let's see what happens.

Finished the sand blasting today. Went around and cleaned up some spots I missed. Now that the frame was clean I had to sand it with 80grit sand paper. The wire wheel left the metal to smooth for the primer to stick. Then onto the paint.
The primer is Duponts Variprime. It's a self etching primer made for bare metal.
I left the frame upside down and shot that first. Rolled it over and finished it up. The hole frame has three coats.

Here's a recap with some pics

That loader in the garage is a 1962 Michigan Model 35A. Gas job. That's a side project I took in. Pulled the starter to get it rebuilt so I couldn't move it out, should have it back Monday. But it does run good. It's getting total restoration so a little over spay won't hurt.

Not to be an ass. But that's only part of the garage. I have two more bays, one with a lift and it's own heat.

Above the spot that my jeeps is taken apart, there are two offices that I don't use and a weight room with heat and A/C. Also a storage area.

I have a 500 gal. waste oil tank and heater. Auto thermostats so it's 70 when I walk threw the door in the morning. I turn the gas heaters down to 65 and turn on the waste oil heater. The garage stays 72 on the coldest of days with just the waste oil heater going. The gas heaters won't turn on at all, unless you open the door to bring something in, then they only run for a few minutes. Very well insulated garage. It's a nice setup. I'm lucky to have it. That's why I was saying in this thread, it's to bad you guys don't live around here.

This is man land at home. I put a new heating and A/C system in but I haven't put a chimney in for the heat yet. For now I just use the bullet heater.

The main part of the house still has a working heating system.

Yes Yes that's right my garage has central air.

I took my Vett to the garage and put it in a storage can so the wife could park inside A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO for the winter. SHE NEVER LEFT.

The pickup is my daily driver. Striped everything off it. No moldings. No Chevy signs except the bow tie on the grill. Got rid of the big mirrors. Kept the factory rims. Nothing to make it look fast. Just clean. Painted it at the garage. Ripped out the 5.3 and built a 6.0. with a fl80 trany. Over 500hp. I just need to get a little time to finish programing the ecm. I'm only tuned out to 2800 rpm right now. I need to flip open the laptop and finish the tune.

When I get board I go Mustang, new Camaro or Challenger hunting.

I had the inside on the frame done threw a friend of mine. He used the same paint I used on the frame. He had a pressure pot and a long hose with a spray nozzle he pulled threw the frame. Very cool setup. There was a plate on the bottom of the frame that had two bolts on it. We pulled the plate and he fed it threw the opening. Turned on the pressure pot and slowly pulled it back.

I need to find a carrier that will fit. I'm going with 4.88's and 35" tires. I think it's time to start putting things back together.

I don't think I'm doing to bad. Total time spent so far is 5 day's when you add it up, with very little help.

Office space is open. Might be a long ride for you guys. Although you do get inside parking.

Went to work on the jeep today. Didn't have much ambition. Called it a day.

Went back to the house, turned on the tube and sat with a friend of mine. Some of you may know him. Goes but the name Mr Budweiser.

I'll hit it again this week and post some more pics. I want this finished by April, so there won't be to many days of kicking back.

Sent one of my guys to the junk yard today for a 8.8 Told him 97 threw 01 ranger rear end with disk brakes. This is what he comes back with.

Everything I get from the junk yard is free. So I can't complain about the drum brakes.

So does anyone know if I can convert this to disk brakes. Also those drums look big to be out of a Ranger, but I could be wrong.

Should I have him sweeping the parking lot tomorrow with an old broom.
JUST KIDDING

My dad stopped by the garage today so I put him to work, Just like he did when I was a kid. He still has some sanding to do, but he got a good start on it.

Now that dads sanding I have a new goal. Both diff's sand blasted and painted, and the floor finished by Sunday.

I was going to 4.56 gears but I'm going with 4.88's with 35" tires. I guess go big or go home.

Saturday I'm picking up a carrier from a D30 that had 3.73 gears. If I'm right a set of 4.88's should bolt right on and fit in my front D30 diff.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Keep in mind this is my first jeep. I'll take all the advise I can get.

Stay tuned more to follow.

I was under the impression that the best 8.8s came out of V8 Explorers. My 8.8 rear is out of a 2001 V8 Explorer; it came with 31 spline axles, posi, and disc brakes. You might want to check with someone who knows FOR SURE that a Ranger rear will work for you. Can't beat free though....

I think the Ranger 8.8's are 27 spline and not the 31 spline like the 8.8 out of an explorer.

Yeah i would boat anchor that 8.8 and go get one from an upper 90's explorer... Mine came from an 98, factory LSD and discs..actually I bought the whole explorer and parted it out to make back what i spent to build up the diff..
