Let the build begin

I've always wanted a jeep so I looked around and found this 94YJ. The jeep couldn't be any newer than a 95. In Mass 1995 and down only needs to pass a safety inspection for a sticker. That allows me to throw a V8 in it if I wanted. I'm staying with the 4.0 for now.

The setup is a 4.0 with a 5 speed and 3.07 gears. I put a thousand miles on it just to make sure it was mechanically sound. It ran great. A little on the ugly side but mechanically sound.

With a lot of help from you guys on gearing, here's my plan.
4" suspension lift
1" body lift.
1" shackle
35"X12.5" tires on 15X10 rims. I don't feel the need for 8" rims. 90% will be on the street. Maybe some trails. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.
8.8 Ford rear end with a 4.56 gear change.
Rear drive shaft change.
DuPont color coat clear coat paint.
Under coat the bottom of the body and seal the floor.
Send the seats out to be recovered. (Great shape just wrong color)
Old style roll cage and change the dash to gray.
Clean up the frame paint and seal.
Clean up the motor.
That's a good start for now.

Thats the exact reason i chose to build a 91 instead of going newer myself.....

Your plan sounds great and looks like your off to a great start... Good luck and keep posting up the pics..

X3 on the obd1. I got a 95 so only saftey inspection. The 700r4 I picked up along with a 350 is actually going down to wyotech with the adapting kit and high performance rebuild kit. My brothers down there in the high performance class and is going to rebuild it for me for free

You have to admit it's nice to have the option. 4.0 or V8

It's nice to have access to a garage like that! I put my 95 back on the road working in a 2 car garage. Wasn't a frame off repair. Just some rust and frame rot. No lift and every night I had to make sure wife's car could park in there to.

I have a two bay at my house. This is my work garage and lucky for me it's big. We could take apart 20 jeeps in here. To bad you live in Ohio. Heats always on.

Sounds like a good build.
Have you considered just seat covers? Save you a bit of money and you can get "water proof" ones.
What are you going to do for front axle?

I have considered seat covers. They never seem to stay tight, so I was going to have them recovered. The seat are in great shape. I was also going to see if they could cover them in the same water proof material. Center of the seat needs to be dark blue the rest will be gray. Thinking about having (Jeep) stitched in.

From what I've read I have to find a carrier with 3.73's and change the gears to 4.56's. My carrier with the 3.07's won't work. The carrier should fit in my D30 if I read everything correctly.

Yep in Cleveland so I had to suspend any serious work until spring. I was able to get it put together and on the road, but still several things to do. Actual I figure it'll never be completely done! Jeeps owners are always looking for new things!!!

I thought I would give Photobucket a try and share some picks I have on the tare down of the jeep. I stayed last night and pulled the tank and rear axle. Let me know if the link doesn't work and I'll try again.

That's funny. I was looking around on some sites at the diesel swaps. I'm going to look some more and do some reading. I'm leaving the 4.0 in for next summer and tare it back down over the following winter for a motor swap.

Got the frame stripped today. Very happy with the over all shape of the frame.
I hit the frame with a wire wheel in a couple of spots. Just trying to get an idea of how fast I could get it cleaned up for paint. Walk in the park
Here are a couple of pics.

Let me give you an idea of what I want it to look like when it's done, with out the bumpers and add a winch. I'll build my own bumpers.
Just so were on the same page. No this is not going to be a mall crawler, I will rip it threw the woods with the rest of you and park on top of an H2 if it ever see's a mall.

What do you use for cutting the steel (if other than plasma cutter)?

I use plasma, torches and if needs to be neat and clean I'll use a cutting wheel, depending on how thick the steal is. They all have there place. Building bumpers I would would probably use the plasma.

Got a little work done over the weekend. Cleaned up the top and sides of the frame with the wire wheel. Hit all the spots a I could. I'll sand blast the rest.
