Yeah man, too bad I can't get a hold of a 4.10 D30 to save my life lol. Dude was a no show for the R/P... so I might have to go for the whole lp30 axle assembly. I am gona hold out and keep looking though.

Thanks man. no real hurry, July 19 for Rausch is my real deadline. i still have a ton of fab work to focus on so I have that before I worry about an axle. Worst case I shell out the 250 and get the whole shebang. I might end up doing that anyways here in 2 weeks if I haven't turned anything up, just to get it off my mind.

10 DS turns to 5 turns of the tire, with 1 tire off the ground, 2 tire rotations = gear ratio... so 2/5x10= 4. 4.10s would be 10.25. So that sounds right. I asked him for a diff tag or VIN to double check but I should be going for it next weekend.

Scored the axle for 175, it's already pulled and it's a 4.10. Gona pick it up next week. 45 mins away, I can't complain. Guy was really cool to deal with and dropped his price and met me in the middle. I was looking at 110+an install kit at around 50, so that's about as cheap as I was gona be anyways. I figure this way I have spare shafts etc incase something happens to mine. Gona sell the (old) r/p and carrier on ebay for like 50 and the housing for 75 on classifieds.

Tomorrow officially starts my summer vacation. Picking up my d30 Monday. Also getting inspected. Good thing I know a guy. He will probably be doing my exhaust then when this is all done.

Of course he left the lower arms on... because they are rusted faster than a weld. Same with the sway bolts and I believe the track bar bolt. brakes/calipers/rotors took about 2 mins. Tried my craftsmen impact, no luck. Tried a breaker bar and I broke the breaker... (I guess I'm too strong right?). So either I need to cut w/ my angle grinder, or find a bigger breaker bar.

The easy stuff is never easy... I would rather do internal work on an axle, weld, or just fabricate/paint/cut all day then rip rusty parts off...

my new d30 Pass coil pad had a 2x2 rusted out spot on the inboard side. Once I clean the housing up I will either plate it with some steel I have, or if it's real bad, I will cut the one off my current housing. As this is only going to be a temp axle for me, I don't want to put a ton of work or money into it for a year or two of use.

Finally got the hub bolts off, had to cut the tracback bolt off to get it off, after the torx bolt stripped the only T50 bit I had. looked beat up when I started. Still have the lower arms to get off... wish me luck.

Drained the fluid, looks decent on the inside, normal wear for it's age but no chips or anything bad on the R/P.

I truly hate living in the rust belt.

Okay, so I have a rusting out coil perch (only the raised cup piece) on the new d30. I was considering plating it, but looking more and more like I would rather just replace it compeltely. Options:

Buy something expensive

Make something cheap.

I am gona try and replate the bottom, then find a piece of 2.5 steel tube I can cut a small section fromm, and then plate the top of that. Issue is finding tube that big.

Still ripping stuck bolts off. I had to cut the sway bar bolts off and then drill and punch out. What a freaking pain. Got those almost out. I got the shafts pulled today after pounding them loose, the dust covers were rusted to hell and basically glued everything together.

Probably gona try to notch my crossmember later today, or tomorrow at latest. My buddy with the notcher wasn't home the other night so I didn't get to use it, so I will just be cutting and grinding it.

IF anyone has suggestions for the coil plates, let me know. I could cut mine off my current D30, but then I can't sell the housing. Which might be okay at this point if I am gona keep the shafts for spares.

To keep it fool proof buy new ones or reuse your old ones if you keep spare parts off of it. I would do option 2 and keep the whole housing. That's what I did when my Dana 35 blew up. I still have the whole thing for shafts and a housing and any other brackets should I need it.

I probably am. Gona keep the shafts etc. sell the carrier and R/P. probably the brakes too since they are new.

Thing is the part the coil rests on is solid. It's just the inner cup is rusted. I have some steel that will almost fit right over that I can weld on. Probably do as a temp fix. Then once my other axle is off I can cut tht piece out and weld it in another time. I gona get Into it more and see how solid it is. I smashed it with a hammer and punch a few times and it was good. Buddy who welds said to plate it but I'm gona have him check it out in person.

That's what I was thinkin but I don't know where to find pipe. I have some exhaust tubing I was gone cut at 2 inches long, then down the seam, then bend to match the hole and weld over. If I can find a piece of 3 inch tube I will use that. I am gona look around a bit more, I have time.

Cleaning my d30 tubes, anything you guys can suggest to prevent further rusting? Decided to compare d30 vs 8.8 ring/carrier. I guess I'll be building the front next!

I've decided to go with the new MC arms that are out. I will be going with rear uppers to start, and then probably front uppers. Both this summer. The rears shortly after my 8.8 install, just because I expect to need SOME adjustment to my pinion angle, although I am confident that I can get it close regardless.

Got the x member tack welded tonight, got the mounts tacked to the frame. I need to notch the x member somewhat in order to clear the front tcase output/driveshaft CV joint. So I will probably neck it down to one inch at that point, should still be plenty strong. I am going to beef it up a little just in case though and put a rib in the point I think. Should be an hour or two work. Didn't get the position exactly how I wanted but this way I have less flexibility in my actual mounting plate. I need to work on welding vertical because I was not very comfortable tonight welding the tabs on the frame. They were only tacks but still would have been ugly if I had been burning them in. That means practice time. Also looks like I will be picking up a welder very soon for at the house so I don't have to go out to the farm. Will be super nice. Next time when I get the cross member finished up I will be able to measure for a rough pinion angle, then I can set up my 8.8 and tack the brackets with the pinion angle set, I can test fit, make any adjustments, and burn it in. Throw all the parts back on, work on getting the brakes in line, and pick up my DS. I have vacation first week of June, then I will be trying to get this all together. Probably knock out the sye, and both axle swaps as well as tranfering my locker and setting up the brakes in the fourth week of June because I have a whole week off work. I should have everything set to do that then. I can get a test run in that following weekend and fix any bugs throughout July, then hit rausch creek. Possible mods before rausch include MC upper rear control arms, rokmen gas tank skid, and outboarded rear shocks. I think I am going to pull the trigger on the arms if they put them on sale for memorial day, if not I won't just yet.
