remotely mounting a winch solenoid

Hi guys.

As the title says, I'm looking at mounting my solenoid under the hood.
1) while it's water proof, I would like it out of the elements
2) of its day on top of the winch, people can mess with it.

I'm thinking of placing it where the abs pump usually sits (opposite side to the battery)

Could any one advise the type of wire/cable I should use...?
What other pitfalls should I look for

Cheers

See what gauge wire came with your winch. It's probably between 2 and 0/1. Try and use as much of the wire that came with it as that gauge wire is expensive. Also placing it that far away from the battery I would bump the wire size up one to keep resistance in the long runs down. While your moving it all around check out making dash controls for the winch. You will also need to find a way to remote mount the controller plug if you don't want to open your hood to use the winch.

You could also go with a remote in-cab control like one of the ones that 12vguy sells, wire it up that way and use the included hand controller if you absolutely need it.

That is what I mentioned for the dash controls. You don't need any fancy stuff. Get a 3 position momentary on-off-on switch and one of those cool toggle switches with the red safety cover on it and your good to go.

I have this one and it rules:
2.5 SQ LARGE BUTTONS

I didn't install it yet (as I'm waiting for my overhead console and customer dash to get here), but I did temp wire it to the winch and it's perfect.

Well...

Got my winch installed with the solenoid under the hood.

3 x 1.5m @35mm wire to the solenoid
1 x 1.7m @35mm main wire
1 x 1.7m @53mm earth wire

Looks quite tidy...

lost 14mm in height at the front bumper due to weight... but i can live with that until i get my lift (soon my precious... soon)

now i just hope i got everything right...
testing it out next weekend...

Just need to install an isolation switch now...
(one of these weekends coming...)

I didnt like the idea of the solenoid box on the winch either. I looked under the hood and realized there wasnt any room, even if there was i wouldnt want to open the hood each time. I ended up with the control box under the passenger seat. That worked good for a while but difficult to connect the three prong plug in due to limited room and visability.
I then removed the female end from the box and ran it to the enter console! The Engo remote chord is still long enough where i can run it out the window and stand by the winch if need be!

If you have a JK, most control boxes sit very nicely between your fuse block and battery.
