Exclamation Scarey article warning of welding around brake cleaner or similar products

This article just posted over on JF fabrication forum this morning was a shocking eye-opener. This is from an upcoming August 2009 magazine so it's not outdated info...

Brake Cleaner = Phosgene Article

Holy smoke, be careful guys!

Thank you very much for posting that, I use brake cleaner on all kinds of stuff because it evaporates so quick.

yap, i had a similar expereince, but with a chemical someone used in a throttle body, i thought i wasn't gonna make it. turned out the chemical composition was about the same as agent orange when it came out the tail pipe.

It does seemingly but I was shown a few years ago how brake cleaner actually leaves an oily residue behind that new brake pads pick up. I now use Simple Green to clean brake rotors before installing new pads.

Freon does the same thing, when exposed to an open flame!

Gubberment used to make phosgene bombs with freon & acetylene tanks, using a standard bomb detonator IIRC. Was in early WWII.

You have been lucky, I'd sure switch to something else like a carb or throttle body cleaner which does totally evaporate.

By the way, using brake cleaner leaves a residue anyway.

Here is another fun ingredient in some brake parts cleaners, or at least used to be.
Trichloroethylene - Wikipedia, the fr...e encyclopedia

Anything that has a Chlorine Base/mixed with Argon will turn to Phosgene. It used to be some Welding antispatter had it in it. Being that I do production welding I am very watchfull of any new product that a sales guy comes through the door with. I have my set in stone products and that is all I use.

we build jeeps and work on various cars every day.....brake clean works well for every thing....dont let novices scare you out of using the best degreaser there is......we use it to clean the concrete floors as well as clean a new gear set or set of rotors....u r talkin about a product that most(or all) real automotive experts use everday....im sure that somebody that uses it once a week is gonna know more about how it works in the real world than somebody that lives on it
