Sell your ideas

Has anyone ever thought about trying to sell their own fabrications or even a "how to" manual? I have a lot of great things in the past I have made and would love to be able to make money off of them.

I can help you a bit here. first off
1patent. Its expensive and there are ways around it so if some big company wants to use your idea they will.
2 copyrighted book/manual. you have to work a lot here but you get a book in your name. If you dont have lots of material you can just write a few chapters and find others to write more chapters.
3. make and sell products. thats a good idea but again way too much work.

what I would suggest is selling by idea each. You make something take pictures and then if someone wants to do that he can do it himself or you can send him a small diagram, list of stuff, and how to procedure.

But that is already done on WF for free so I dont know if anyone would really pay too much for it. Thats the thing with solo work, you never get recognition. thats the reason I am going the long way.

There is also other digital copyright stuff that might help a little bit but its all too much work to start. once you get a hang of it its easy.

I hope that helps.

First, to publish a book one does not need a patent on the ideas contained in it. There is no expense involved in getting a book published, if there is you've chosen a vanity press or a scam "publisher".

If you feel you have an idea a publisher might want, you need to put together a proposal and submit it to publishers or agents who handle non-fiction manual type books. After that, you have to finish researching (yes, you should already have a clear idea of what you want in it). If any of your ideas come from other people, you have to get written permission and plan of giving credit. You also have to have lots of pictures, so either you hire or take them.

Lastly, if you've never written anything and are serious about getting a book published, you need to start writing. You must have a clear concise style that lends itself to ease of understanding. Manuals must be straight forward and easy to read.

It's a lot of work, but it's not impossible. Lots of people do it, lots of people love doing it. I'd encourage anyone to give it a shot if they feel they've got a new idea or new twist on a non-fiction book.

As for selling your own fabrications, I'd say there's quite a number of people who do it. I have a "homemade" bumper from a small business. Not that hard, all you need is the ability to create a product people want and a business license.

ya patent and book is a different thing. But if you are really good and patent say for example a new trunk design. Then approach smittybilt and tell them that it could be done, and they think it would sell, then you can make some money.

With book, you will make money if you can find a publisher. Its hard to find a publisher if you are first time writer. I have a friend who self published a book! Well this was her first book and I think she is gonna break even on the cost in a couple of months. After that most of it will be profit.

writing skills do not come in a day so I will encourage you to start working on it if you want to go that way. Hell I will proof read and edit for you! But its a little hard work and I know a lot of people who gave up in the middle.

You have to be very careful about copyrighted material. If you read something in a website and you build up on that, you can't use that without the written permission of the author. It will be great if someone comes up with a garage solutions to all issues in a jeep kinda book.

Self-"publishing", unless it's a niche market, is never a way to go. The book will never see wide distribution into a brick and mortar book store and without this, making any sort of viable money is near impossible. It's best to take the time to do it the right way instead of the fast way. And I hate to be snide, and this isn't a dig, but people who edit normally write exceptionally cleanly.

Editing should be done by people who can do a line edit for not only grammar and punctuation, but content and clarity of ideas. Normally, this isn't done by the same person. But, until you have a fully formed idea, this isn't an aspect you should worry about. While you're writing, you can get a couple of friends who are willing to give you an honest critique. Beta readers are really helpful, but only if they and you can identify that negative criticism is a favor to the writer.

Don't want to raise up anything too old but I wanted to chip in my $.02,

Yes I have and do sell my own fabrications, been making a fine bit of change doing it too. The main thing is to find that one thing that everyone needs and provide it. Web sites are cheap to put up and paypal makes getting your money easy. The best thing I've found though is to find something that is easy to make (little time involved) so your profit it maximized.

You'll never know if you don't try, don't worry about patents unless you've got some million dollar idea.
