Stock bumper/tire carrier?

Two ideas really, one is it possible to attach a tire carrier to the stock bumper? Really don't mind my stock, and since I've got a hidden hitch I'd be alright with keeping it..but really need a tire carrier.

Two Toying with the idea of making/having made a tire carrier that's removeable. Most of the time I'm within 10 miles of my house anyway so I don't carry my spare to save on weight/mpg. Thinking if I could remove the whole carrier it'd save even more..and wouldn't look silly driving around without the spare tire. Ideas? anyone ever made one before?

Well, I would say no to keeping the stock bumper. I doubt it will hold up. The stock bumper metal is very thin and just wont last. If you like the look of the stock bumper just make your own bumper with thicker metal and use the same dimensions as the stock.

I think the removable tire carrier is a cool idea, I can't really think of any way to do this though. Maybe a concept like the doors where to remove the hinge you lift and rotate???? Just my .02

I've never made one, but the removable carrier sounds like a good idea. I'm thinking of something where the carrier arm is removable, so you don't have to bother with a swing away hinge mechanism. Maybe some type of pin system like those used on trailer hitches.

If you search the build area, I say a Guy build on using an axle stub as the pivot. Pop the bearing cap remove the castle nut and lift off. Might have to clean the grease off and regrease when you reinstall but would work.

you could also build a tire carrier that fit into your hitch and pin it in there and when you need to open your tailgate have it drop down towards the ground out of your way. i built a few of these. i aslo built a few bumpers with a swing out.

The Dirtworx swing out is pretty easy to remove. You might be able to use this idea if you build your own.
He put a bolt at the top of the pivot pin, that holds the swing-out on. All you'd have to do is remove that bolt, then lift off the tire carrier. You'd probably want to put something back on the pivot to protect it from rust. I've actually been toying with that idea myself. A piece of PVC pipe would suffice, then just put the bolt back in.

Here's the pivot point:

In that last pic, you can see the recess for the big washer on the bolt.

It's important to think of the weight of your "swing-out", or "lift-off" carrier as you will probably need a hoist to get it off the stem that it would be setting on.

I know mine with just the tire on it would be a bear to get off without a lifting device. Otherwise you'd have to remove the tire first, then the rack.

If it's light enough to lift off then it probably wasn't built strong enough. Just a thought.

lol well thanks I decided to go a cheap route for the momment and just go with a plain bumper and run no spare right now..maybe after the summer i'll look at building/buying something bigger! Step one:Learn to process
