swapping d44hp/9"...

So i staring my swap/build of ford d44 hp and a ford 9". Just to let you know whats being done to them 4.88's spool rear, ox in front, reid racing knuckles, balistic high steer, tnt customs front brace/mounts, RE rear brackets. I am doing the rear first( due to broken spider gers in d35). Installing the gears tomorrow in the 3rd member.

i run the same setup with chromos up front and a spool in the rear on 39s......i usually go where i want...i put in 5:13s thought

i broke a 9" shaft within the first 2 hours of wheeling at harlin, ky but the tires i am running are a lil big for the axles i swapped in.......they were just to good a deal

in my case the tires were a good deal......the axles were as cheap as any junkyard axles......i paid 750 for four brand new 39" tsls...the beadlocks werent so cheap though

Yeah I hear ya. I run 37" Comp Claws right now, but after the axles I'm going to be looking for either some Sticky Treps or Red Labels.


Hey JeepJeep, good lookin out on the Ballistic Hi-Steer arm. Always like to see people supporting Arizona companies and they are building some pretty sick shit down there in Tucson these days.

uve got all that nice rock out there....weve got mostly mud on rock type stuff by me so stickys arent so good......i can get you some pretty bomb proof high steer arms for 44s and 60s if interested....they are ohio breed though

If you are doing hi-steer on it you won't need that drop pitman arm.

consider getting your brackets from ruffstuff specialtys they make some pretty heavy duty stuff for a fraction of the cost....its all 3/8s steel......the re brackets are 3/16s

ordered the sye and ox locker for the front, today. who here has an ox what length cable did you order and where did you mount the selector?As for the brackets, i am looking at these TJ Wrangler Rear Axle Bracket Kit [Axle Kit-TJ] - $225.00 : Mad 4 Wheel Drive, Bulletproof Offroad Parts & Custom Axle Assemblies but i am not forsure yet the RE brackets are big money for the same 3/16 steel. I will check out your suggestion, thanks.

the brackets i recommended are not exact replacement brackets....they are a little more generic which for a custom install is good but if you want to keep it factory they are a waste.......i double triangulated mine so the brackets they sold saved me about 150 bucks

Locker wont be here until mid january, so looks like i have a little extra time... waiting on rear brackets to show up, so i can run some beads...gunna order the tnt truss this week some time hopefully its a quick turn around.

that truss you ordered should go on before your brackets.....it gives you proper spacing on your coil buckets and your lca's

well, been busy like everybody through the holidays,but ox locker(woohoo) came in early and the super short sye, so back to work i go...

the wrong axle bearings for the 9" came in, does anybody know what my axle came out of? It has 31spline w/ 3/8 bolts for the axle retaining plate.

sounds like big bearing old style......u got a rearend shop in town that can affirm that....what is the axle shaft length and what size is the retainer plate.....i could identify it from those items of info

Hey, im not sure if you mentioned it yet or not but what tire size are you gonna be running? I have a set of full widths from a 79 f250 Im throwing under my rig in spring and I was thinking of gettin some 38's. I have a hp44 front and 60 rear so my only real concern is the front. Think it'll hold up to being locked on 38's and some pretty hefty wheelin if I do cromo shafts?

I am putting 37's under mine and leavin stock shafts right now, but ill upgrade if it lets go...but your terrain is probably tougher than mine.

Im just gonna be keeping my eyes open for 38-40's and try to find a deal but I hope the front 44 will be a decent investment to hold up to those tires if I build it up. I dont know about the tough terrain though. Around Michigan it is mostly very mild stuff with some hard trails here and there. But I have been traveling more lately with my rig and its the out of state trails that I am more worried about.

my 44 turning 39s is a time bomb i feel but i have run some tough lines as you have seen grntj and it seems to hold together....chromos are a must for any tire over 37s....not to mention high end joints b/c they are in fact the weak link

Has anybody heard a spacer/shims needed for the 9"? well my backlash adjuster is maxed out and i need more adjustment. i can see if i put a shim between the bearing and the carrier it will give me more adjustment or if there is a collar that you can put inbetween the adjuster and the bearing race. My ring gear is hitting on the case by the 3rd pinion bearing.

and on another note my rear axle brackets came , they look real nice !

the d44 runs the same size joints as the ford ttb d35s. 760s.

jake you will have serious failure of that d44 by the end of the up coming summer i am sure.

chuck i think with the investment in chromos and joints i have i should be fine.....i dont go to autozone and buy brute forces...ctms or superjoints only for me.......i see no failure of the 44 in the future other than the stubs or the u joints b/c the inner shafts are plenty strong enough and the ring and pinion are also....please dont compare a d44 to a d35 ifs on any forum
