Thanks, Owen! I'm subscribed on another thread where a guy is pondering a set of TrXus MTs - 35x12.5r15s for only $500. That is the route I had to take due to my credit and just not wanting to get in over my head. Check your local Craigslist ads, because you don't know what might be lurking out there - if the ad is indeed legitimate, and you catch the deal while it is still available.

Nice thread man.
I've got a 2000 TJ. Next set of tires will be 40s :-)

Even though, I was able to bolt on a set of 35s, my tires rubbed the big, plastic Pocket Flares that came with my Jeep (as part of the Tomb Raider package).

1 block from the US/Mexico border in the Soler section of Tijuana

2 blocks south of the US/Mexico border lies Reynoso Off-Road. A gentleman named, "Flaco" or 'Skinny' gave my Pocket-flares the 'Tijuana treatment'. Now, flexing won't be the problem it had previously been.

Let the buildup continue!

After returning from a Baja beach campout, my Track bar had worked itself loose. I didn't diagnose my "Wheel Hop" until just a week ago, but the new track bar bushing is doing its job well. On Thursday evening, I swapped out the drag link for a new one - with a Tie Rod End that will hold grease inside of its boot. I aligned the Jeep - not to spec., but good enough. Today, after a pro alignment job, I realized that the Jeep *needs* a better steering setup. Nothing really looked as, "finished" as the Currie Currectlync system. So, I bit the bullet and made the order.

Next, I will show my install of the Currectlync system and review its qualities vs. the OEM-level steering equipment I have run on the Jeep for the past 10 years. This should be good.

Before (on the beach)

After (on the Tow Truck)

Steering parts arrived! Install and alignment this weekend. This should be a game-changer..

I had the Jeep towed to a repair shop - at midnight, because I was real tired and it was too late for me to accurately diagnose the problem - a loose lower track bar bolt and worn track bar bushing.

The Jeep has a shimmy - only at 65+ mph now. This will be fixed with new control arms, new shocks, new Daystar front swaybar body bushings, new wheel bearings and maybe ball joints. This work has been so expensive, that I have had to put some of the repairs on hold. This next round of the buildup should solve my shimmy and DW problems for good.

I just found out (in the driveway) that my 136,000 mile OEM radiator has a leak along the top seam. Either, I'll get a $165.00 Ebay Aluminum radiator, or a $165.00 OEM-type radiator from a local auto parts store this weekend.

I'm a fan of Autozone or Advance OEM type radiators since they are lifetime warranty. They even warranty them if a stick goes through it!

New radiator!

The install was a pain, and the new thermostat needs to be pulled and I need to use RVT to help the gasket hold the coolant inside the housing.

200 mile road test

The radiator, thermostat and gasket held up well under their 200 mile road test along I-15 to San Diego and back. The Jeep rested on Fiesta Island in San Diego's Mission Bay this afternoon. Fiesta Island is one of the only places in Southern California where you can park your Jeep on the beach and have a proper picnic.

I can't believe I bought a radiator with roughly 1 month of usage, but it is leaking at the seam in two places. This needs to get worked out before the summer months arrive. It was 90 degrees today - I'd hate to be stranded on a hot day. No bueno.

Thanks BRUT4CE! It felt like yesterday when I saw the 5 or 6 Tomb Raiders parked at the dealers lot, and I was told, "These are the VERY LAST Rubicons from Daimler Chrysler. Which one do you want??" I was a kid in the candy store that day.

Cooling issues solved...for now

Yesterday, I replaced this poorly Chinese-made radiator for an exact replacement. I'll be saving for a nice Griffin. But, in the meantime, here is how the installation/replacement went.

The metal seam bows out, allowing for the coolant loss.

$120 for possible headaches is not worth the savings. I'm going to replace this Chinese-made 'Spectra Premium' CU2101 radiator for the '97-06 Wrangler TJ for an American-made aluminum radiator before my next Baja desert foray.

The replacement Spectra Premium CU2101 Jeep Wrangler TJ radiator still in its' box. The metal seams lined up with the plastic, and this one did not leak upon initial setup and driving. The Spectra CU2101 radiator it replaced had under 100 miles and leaked coolant upon startup. No good for my '03 Rubicon which I have garaged since its' purchase.

Can you tell which Spectra Premium CU2101 radiator was made on a Friday in Bejing, China?

My new Spectra Premium CU2101 radiator for my Jeep Wrangler TJ had bent fins inside of the radiator. Yet another sign that this radiator will only be used temporarily, and not for extended Baja desert runs.

Duralast Wheel Bearings (installed in Feb. 2014)

Half the price of Timken's, but with a 12 month warranty. We'll see how they hold up to 35s.

Future Tire Plans: Replace the BFGs???

Yesterday, the wife (left) weighed in on the BFGs' weak sidewalls, chip and cut prone treads, and difficulty in balancing due to all of the cuts from our last Baja trip. So, yesterday, I went to America's Tire for a set of 34" TrXus MTs. TrXus MTs will be out of production until late 2014, but if some 34's were sitting in a warehouse, it would be nice to have some bolted on later this week.

Anyhow, the Manager told me that their 'vendor' no longer carries Interco products - aside from their ATV tires.

Future Tire plans:
I'll rotate in the new AT/KO spare, and buy 1 replacement tire with the hopes of running the new Falken M/Ts in 2015.

Falken MTs on Gerald's SAAVY race car

Need me some good tires...

The 'Deegan #38' tires go on sale tomorrow. They look like a good street/trail tire. I might check these out in lieu of waiting 1 year for the Falkans...

Shopping completed -- my Death Wobble Eliminator kit!

I've had death wobble and shimmies ever since I installed the 35" BFG AT/KOs. No fun. I did some shopping recently and I think the Death Wobble will be a distant memory.

Upgrades that I bought:

4 Pro-Comp MX-6 shocks (Buy 3 get 1 Free!) - tuned for soft top application.

Rubicon Express Gen 2 Swaybar Disconnects (the current swaybar links are real short, affecting my ride)

Synergy Ball Joint upgrade kit (w/3 year 4WP warranty)

Metal Cloak double adjustable front upper/front lower Aluminum control arms.

Installation, alignment, and test drive will all take place next week. I'll let everyone know if this knocks out the death wobble and shimmy symptoms once and for all. If not, Stan at JPi will deal the knock out blow to my shimmy problem.

Buildup notes

The Synergy ball joints went in - no comments yet, I have to test drive the Jeep.

Look at all of the grit inside of the axle tube. I'll be running an upgraded axle seal kit real soon.

The shocks were old and were replaced. I also replaced the swaybar disconnects with the Rubicon Express Gen 2 discos.

Metal Cloak double adjustable control arms -- getting these installed later today.

Install notes from Metal Cloak for lubricating and installing the Duroflex Joints

Installed: Pro-Comp MX-6 Monotube shocks (vast improvement in ride).
Installed: Rubicon Express Gen 2 Swaybar Disconnects - again, a great improvement. The upper connect section will be drilled and set up when I have more time. Without adequate instructions or on-line photos, these took some time to accurately assemble.
Installed: Synergy Ball Joints - the shimmy and occasional death wobble are gone now.

Next to be installed: Metal Cloak Double Adjustable front upper/front lower control arms.

The whole enchillada - including the Currie Currectlync Steering System.

Drivers side

Setting up the Rubicon Express Gen 2 swaybar disconnects took some time and plenty of patience.

Coin toss

The frontend still has a shimmy. When driving down the I-215 near the March Air Museum, I noticed the front end had a speed-sensitive shimmy. The rear also wiggled under the force of my BFGoodrich AT/KOs - all 4 tires were recently balanced by America's Tire. It is most definitely the tires.

Later today, the front upper and lower Metal Cloak arms get installed, and not a day too soon. Let's see how much better these control the front BFGs which are constantly fighting for control when pushed above 50 mph.

Road test with Double Adjustable Arms

The possible source of my endless steering problems - a damaged upper control arm bushing.

New upper Metal Cloak double adjustable control arms (TJ) next to the stamped OEM TJ control arms.

The Metal Cloak aluminum control arm is one beefy arm! Getting set up...

The Pro Comp control arm served its' purpose well, but after the coil spring spacers and 35" tires, its time for replacement had come.

New (2013 and 2014) parts installed:
  • Rubicon Express Gen 2 Swaybar Disconnects
  • Rubicon Express Adjustable Track bar
  • Currie Currectlync Steering system
  • Synergy Upper and Lower Ball Joints
  • Pro Comp MX-6 Front shocks (both sides)
  • Autozone-brand Unit Bearings (both sides)
  • Autozone-brand Radiator (#2 after the first one was returned - defective)
  • Metal Cloak Aluminum Double Adjustable Control Arms

Technology to the rescue!

Screen shots of my alignment - Darrel at Goodyear (on Indiana Ave. Riverside, CA) set up the Metal Cloak Aluminum arms by simply leaving them 'loose', and turning the arms, making small adjustments until the steering was within spec. The results spoke for themselves.

Darrel adjusting the aluminum Metal Cloak arms with patience and accuracy.

'Green' means "On the money" when aligning with this particular software. Darrel made adjustments with very accurate results.

When finished, Darrel took the Jeep on a test drive.

So far, so good! 55 mph road test - with the Wife as a passenger, and no shimmy. One of my tires is egg-shaped, but I plan on getting the front tires changed out soon and sold as spares. Next: Axle seal job and my Jeep is ready for the trails!

New treads

The All-Terrains are great tires for the street, but I really pushed them in ways that they were not engineered. So, I elected for a new set of KM2s.

The neighbors prerunner in the background is running Yokohamas

While getting the axle seals taken care of, Martin the local Fabricator/Welder brought his rig over to the shop and for $100, fabbed and welded on this nice track bar bracket.
