Trailer Laws?

Hey guys,
Been a while since Ive been here, but ive managed to make my way back and am looking for some advice. I live in socal and just picked up a little truck bed trailer for $150 that i plan on doing some work on that will meet my expectations. It still has a differential in the axle. does anyone know if there is a law in california prohibiting having this? Ive looked all over the net and havent found a clear answer.
Thanks in advance!

You could check with the DMV, they would know for sure. I can't tell you if it's legal or not, but I've seen a number of truck bed trailers on the road with what apears to be standard diffs.

All I can say is that I've NEVER seen a single travel trailer, pop up camper, semi trailer or ANY commercially sold trailer WITH a differential.

Hmmm...

This type of trailer is pretty common in NM. If having the diff is illegal it shouldn't be that hard to switch it out with a straight axle of some sort.

ya all of the research ive seen online has been either way...some california guys said that it was no issue getting it registered and other california guys said they couldnt get it registered with the differential still in tact.

I agree...i dont think ive seen a commercially sold trailer with a differential either. The little trailer I bought was made out of a truck bed and the guy who made it just disconnected the drive shaft from the differential and left the axle

As stated check with the DMV. I know here in Ky if you keep the trailer in state only, you don't even have to put a tag on it.
