Weld a reciever to rear bumper?

Has anyone out there successfully welded a reciever to the rear of their Jeeps bumper??

I want to be able to use a bike rack that I currently own, as well as a metal cargo rack......I dont want to add a hitch because they are like $125 and lower my ground clearance....

I spoke to some shops that will do the welding and their concern is that too much weight may rip off the rear bumper....

The oem bumper is like 16 ga. formed up steel and is not strong enough to hold your lunch box let alone a bike rack and bike, I'm glad your welder did not do the job as someone that does not know any better might try and pull a trailer with that and have very bad results.

You need to tie it into the frame somehow. run a 1/2 inch piece of steel on the bottom with bolt holes and frame tie ins and then weld into that maybe?

I am thinking about putting one on the front of my new bumper now...

Mine is made into the rear bumper, and yes the thin weak ass metal the bumper bolts to would basically get ripped right off under too much weight. But as golden says some kind of reinforcement to the frame would be idea in this case. I just don't hall too much weight is why I haven't done mine yet.

I would either go with a real hitch or find a bike carrier that hangs from the spare tire. JMO.
