Which steel should I use for my winch bumper base?

My choices are 3/8" military grade steel or 1/2" mild steel...

The 3/8 is $4 cheaper a foot than the 1/2...

Most bumpers are 3/16ths to 1/4.. I think 3/8ths would be about perfect..

Neither.

No more than 1/4" is necessary. 3/8" will kill your front end and weigh a ton.

The winch plate portion should be 1/4". The rest of it can be 3/16" if desired, and still be plenty strong.

1/4 inch worked great for both the bumper and the winch plate strong yet not overkill
