YJ steering box skid build

few days ago I was about to purchase the 1/4 inch fabtech steering box skid on 4wd, had my credit card number in and was double checking my order when i decided to make my own skids. After that i ran outside with a flashlight, masking tape, cardboard from my garage and a knife i made a mockup of what it should look like so i know it would fit before i decide to start cutting material.

Finished the mockup:

Got some scrap 3/16th inconel 718 at work, and made a second cardboard mock-up saturday night in the light and changed it up from my previous design. I just modeled it up in Autodesk inventor.

Had some big progress on tuesday, i cut the inconel with the plasma cutter and ground it flat, rounded the corners and tacked the pieces in place.

Cut up and ready for tacking:

Finished tacking:

It ended up fitting perfectly the first time. At this point i still had to drill 2 more holes in it to mount it to the bumper and finish welding.

Tonight i finished welding the inside, drilling the two holes, grinding the edges round, and sandblasting it to prep for painting.

Got a little dirty after the sandblasting lol

Today i finally had enough time to paint the skid and drill the holes in the bumper. A buddy of mine recommended hammered grey paint so i checked it out online first and bought some at Home Depot today, as well as some stainless steel hardware. the paint has a pretty cool color effect that i like alot.

Did 6 or 7 coats earlier today and still waiting for it to fully dry. Heres some pics after its finished being painted...

Ill have more pics when its on tomorrow

very nice. i love hammered finish. the best part is you cant tell when you do touch ups because of the texture. i use it on everything from wheels to my old XJ body was all painted with hammered finish.

Ok, so i got a little side tracked after class and went to work and worked on welding up my sway bar quick discos and a few other things for around the house, so i am only able to post up some skid plate dimensions up now.
I measured the skid plate after it was on the jeep so some dimensions might not work out.

First is the dimensions for each individual piece:

This is the welding assembly. make sure you tack it to make sure everything fits before you completely weld it. Each piece should be placed and tacked like this:

Let me know if the dimensions dont work. thanks!

Sorry for the long wait, I have finally had time to put up some dimensions that you can actually read. Just a warning; i put these dimensions together after my skid plate was installed so they might not be 100% accurate. im pretty sure there extremely close but please correct me if im wrong. The 2 0.500 inch diameter holes on the side plate are larger than the bolts to make it an easier fit. I believe the bolts that hold it in are 7/16th so its close and still able to move. Also refer to the image above that shows where to weld. dont forget to tack before you fully weld. Good Luck!

Mid Plate:

Bolt side plate (attaches to the 2 bolts on the steering box)

Top and front plate: (you can use a clearance hole of 0.397 for the 2 holes for a 3/8 bolt)

Side plate: (closest to passenger side)
