few days ago I was about to purchase the 1/4 inch fabtech steering box skid on 4wd, had my credit card number in and was double checking my order when i decided to make my own skids. After that i ran outside with a flashlight, masking tape, cardboard from my garage and a knife i made a mockup of what it should look like so i know it would fit before i decide to start cutting material.
Got some scrap 3/16th inconel 718 at work, and made a second cardboard mock-up saturday night in the light and changed it up from my previous design. I just modeled it up in Autodesk inventor.
Today i finally had enough time to paint the skid and drill the holes in the bumper. A buddy of mine recommended hammered grey paint so i checked it out online first and bought some at Home Depot today, as well as some stainless steel hardware. the paint has a pretty cool color effect that i like alot.
Did 6 or 7 coats earlier today and still waiting for it to fully dry. Heres some pics after its finished being painted...
very nice. i love hammered finish. the best part is you cant tell when you do touch ups because of the texture. i use it on everything from wheels to my old XJ body was all painted with hammered finish.
Looks awesome. Can you post the dimensions, etc from those plans to save us "copy cats" from having to re-duplicate you effort. This is a deff future plan for our YJ and yours came out perfect. Nice fab job.
Ok, so i got a little side tracked after class and went to work and worked on welding up my sway bar quick discos and a few other things for around the house, so i am only able to post up some skid plate dimensions up now.
I measured the skid plate after it was on the jeep so some dimensions might not work out.
First is the dimensions for each individual piece:
This is the welding assembly. make sure you tack it to make sure everything fits before you completely weld it. Each piece should be placed and tacked like this:
So my body lift took longer to install than i thought. didnt have a chance to get some better dimension pics but ill try sometime this weekend.
