Insurance on a new "improved" jeep

Hey Gang,

Do any other Canadians have experience with buying a new Jeep and sinking a lot of money into mods? I'm sure you're out there. Anyway, how did you insure the improved vehicle? I have full replacement insurance when I bought the vehicle...but that doesn't cover any mods...only the original purchase price. My insurance company is unsure of how to handle this. Any specific insurance companies that you like for this type of thing? dislike?

Be very careful about this. I asked my insurance company about this last year and they responded with "either remove your lift or find new insurance". The explanation I got was that insurance companies only insure factory vehicles and that they can't guarantee how they will perform in an accident situation. I ended up going to a broker and they sorted out my insurance so that both my Jeep, upgrades, myself and others would be covered in case of an accident.

Insurance is different in all provinces I believe so it could be completely different out there. Either way I think its better to be covered even if it costs a bit more. Good Luck

It is also illegal for insurance companies to refuse you insurance coverage. They can jack the rate but they cannot deny you coverage.

Insurers can refuse to insure you somewhat as each insurance company has their own rules filed with FSCO (superintendent for insurance companies) so you are somewhat right they can't deny you insurance unless they have rule filed with FSCO to deny you.
Each company has their own rules and guidelines filed where they can deny to insure you based on driving record or vehicle types. Example branded vehicles, right hand drive or some modifications.
Some companies rules are more strict than others so its best to shop and be upfront about modifications. Failure to disclose can leave you in a worst position when a claim occurs. There will be a company that will insure modified jeeps used for off roading just have to shop around.
Rates also can't be jacked up as you have to file them to. They may increase year to year but they are all filed for increases or decreases.
I hope this helps.
I work in the industry and would be happy to answer any other concerns.
