Registration in Alberta

For all those folks from Alberta who already do go offroad, I am wondering what type of registration is necessary to legally go to the trails. Do any of you know? I have read about an OHV registration but that is not permitted on the highways, is it alright to go offroad with simply a regular registration/license plate? Thanks guys.
