1990 jeep wrangler problem

Hi Folks,

I Am New Here. My Daugters 1990 Jeep Wrangler Will Shut Off While Driving And Start Back Up 5-10 Minutes Later And Shut Off Again Randomly. We Have Had It In 3 Shops And Spent Hundreds Of Dollars Without Resolving Origional Problem. The Last Shop Told Us They Couldn't Figure It Out. Anyone With Any Ideas Would Be Appreciated.

How often?
Are there any other symptoms?
What have the shops tried so far?
Is it starting on it's own 5-10 minutes later? (if so, name it Christine and sell it quick)
What's with capitalizing every word?

Welcome to Wrangler forum.

Okay that is freaky.... Now, is it giving any codes? I am thinking some sort of bad ground perhaps, bad fuse relay, Does it do it every time your drive it?

The last time in shop they spent 20 hours checking wiring and replaced the fuse relay, i will have to go through all the receipts and really check into all the parts they have replaced but it has been in and out for the last 6 months. She may drive one day and it will not quit but the next it will it is random.

sounds like one of those jeeps that has a mind of its own. Checking the coil is not a bad idea, cause if it does get hot, you might as well as forget it.

The joke is (it was just a joke honest) is it restarting without anyone actually manipulating the ignition switch? you know, like if it were posessed and acting of it's own volition.

Ya got me pretty much stumped without being able to fondle it myself.
How mechanically inclined is your daughter? can she test for spark? fuel? use a scanner while it's having the problem?

Have you checked to see if you get spark or if fuel is being pumped while it is in its down state?

It sounds as if it must not be having issues when it is in the shop and they are grasping at straws.

My 94 used to shut down every now and then. It did it for about 6 months after I had let it sit for about a year without running it. (repairing it from a roll). Supposedly I had fuel injector issues, but the problem corrected itself, eventually. Do you know if it sat for awhile>

Have they replaced the Crank Position Sensor? This is a pretty common "WTF" ignition problem with Jeeps. There should be a pair of wires that lead to it at the top of the bellhousing on the drivers side. Find these wires now and the next time it quits, reach for and wiggle them right at the sensor and see if it starts. It's something you can replace on your own, although the bolts are sort of hard to get to.

Here's what you are looking for.
