2 wheel to 4 wheel?

Hi, I finally own my own 2002 TJ Sport with no owner's manual. I previously had a '97 JGC and then a '04 JGC, both with all time 4 wheel drive. I barely remeber the procedure from swithcing from Hi to LO with them. My question is, What is the procedure for changing from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive on the '02 Wrangler with a manny tranny?

Push the clutch in, pull back on the transfercase shifter, let the clutch out. for 2 to 4, this can be done at up to 50 mph.

What have we got?

you can go from 2H to 4H at any speed up to 55mph.. but imo if you can do 55mph you don't need 4H.. From 4H to 4L you need to be going 3mph or less and give it one smoth pull from 4H to 4L.. For a manually tranny im having a brain fart on this.. Push in the clutch. it's either you have to be in 1st gear or it can be done in any gear.. someone will have to veryify that for me..

Unlike your NP249 Full Time ZJ and WJ, The TJ has a part time system.. This means the road has to be covered in snow in order to use it on the road. You can not run it on dry pavement

Welcome to the forum!

from 2H to 4H you can directly shift into 4H and back to 2H either auto or manual. on a auto you should be in neutral to shift into 4L. on a manual to 4L depress the clutch. the same applies going from 4L back to 4H. 4H is a sycronized gear meaning you can shift while moving. its a good idea not to shift into 4H above 35 as it can prematurely wear out the syncronizer. 4L is not sycronized and should never be shifted into or out of while moving. hope this helps
some may call it overbuilt. my right foot calls it future scrap.

Thanks for the welcome Wagon. Success going from 2H to 4H....................... Manual Procedure: Drive forward 25 mph (approximately) There is no need to disengage the clutch while changing. Pull back on the transfer lever from 2H to 4H or from 4H to 2H. I have not done the change to 4L yet. But I will attempt it and let everyone know, thanks again

You know you drive a TJ when you have the parts for the mod, the right tools for the job, a BFH & still need a Sawzall to get the job done!
