258 vs 2.5

Hi,

I bought a 2.5 Liter yj around 6 months ago. I've been looking for a 4.0 but my friend is selling a 1979 cj5 with a 258 and a 3 speed transmission in tough running condition but only wants $500. How fast does the 258 go. Is it worth the engine and tranny swap if I somewhat build the motor or should I just make the cj5 into an offroad beater.

Welcome Burton! I would wheel/beat the crap out of that CJ5 and put a SBC in your YJ!

I keep thinking of a 350 or 318 but I'm only a junior in high school with no money and only a little bit more than basic motor knowledge. I want to do the easiest swap possible

I would pass. Few reasons, your going from Fuel injection to carb. Lots of work for little gain the 258 puts out about 120hp when new. The torq would be far better however. the 3spd might be the t-150 which was a good trans, but is not geared low enough for wheeling, I ran one in a 79 cj and it was okay but not great. Thus, save your coin.

Do you think that a 4.0 would be easier

Well, here is the thing, even with the 4.0L you will need a new trans and work done to the t-case.. so its big project. Some folks end up selling the 4cly Jeep and buying another jeep with the 6 already in it to save time and $$$.

The only reason I want to keep my yj is because it has a new frame. That's the main reason I want to do a swap

Think with that much work, you might be better off looking at another jeep. Just my thought.
